Roof Top Gunman Receives Deferred Sentence

NEWPORT CITY - The man who climbed on the roof of his garage with a gun last September received a one-year deferred sentence with probation after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor charge of reckless endangerment in Orleans County Superior Court Criminal Division Tuesday.

Albany Firefighter Pleads To Setting Fire To Own Station

NEWPORT CITY - The man who set the Albany Fire Station on fire last summer pled no contest in a plea agreement in Orleans County Superior Court Criminal Division Tuesday to a felony charge of second degree arson and a misdemeanor charge of reckless endangerment.
Elmer Joerg, 46, of Albany will be sentenced for his crime in 30 to 40 days.

State Poised To Eliminate Small School Funding

DERBY - The Legislature is poised eliminate small school funding starting in 2019, reducing the funding over a three-year period.
Gov. Peter Shumlin has also announced a disinterest in establishing a network of fiber optic cables that would connect all schools to the statewide infrastructure.

Credit Union CEO To Serve Three Years In Prison

DERBY LINE – Debra Kinney, 59, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Border Lodge Credit Union in Derby Line, will serve the next three years in federal prison. Kinney pleaded guilty to embezzling last year and was sentenced Monday morning in Federal Court in Burlington.

Power Company Buys Nelson Farm for $1.3 M

A long land dispute between a wind developer and an Albany couple is over. The parties have reached a settlement whereby Green Mountain Power will buy Shirley and Don Nelson’s farm for $1.3 million.

Harwood Tops North Country 4-3 in Home Opener

NEWPORT–The North Country Falcons' boys tennis team played their home opener against the Harwood Highlanders on Monday afternoon at Prouty Beach, but unfortunately for the hometown team, they fell just a bit short, losing 4-3 to drop their record 1-1 on the year.
"We're very dependent on the first four singles spots, and it is kind of a fickle thing because they can't win all of their matches," said NCU coach Gary Atchinson. "We were right in it with both of our doubles matches, and with a few breaks either way it could have turned out either way.",
