Local Activists Support Occupy Wall Street Protests

NEWPORT, VT - Area activists came out in the cold Wednesday in support of the Occupy Wall Street movement that is spreading across the United States.
The protest seeks to call attention to the influence of big money on Washington politics and has drawn supporters from all political persuasions.
Many have complained that the federal government is spending tax dollars bailing out big businesses and “too big to fail” financial institutions while the working class is left economically stranded and paying the bill.

Coutts Races Weather to Build New Lodge

DERBY, VT - The Coutts Moriarty Summer Camp’s new Education Lodge and Dining Hall is under construction at the upper camp level.
A foundation has been poured and workers are busy moving dirt. Donations are still being accepted to help with the project.
Coutts Camp has merged with non-profit, Siskin Ecological Adventures and provides 500 educational programs to over 10,000 school children each year.

Another Ballpark Vandalized

ALBANY, VT - Sometime last weekend, two pickup trucks vandalized the ballpark in Albany Village.
Deep tire marks are shown here with tracks leading all around the park. The damage is believed to be in the thousands of dollars to repair. Although there are suspects, the Vermont State Police in Derby are investigating the incident and request your help.

Derby Board Asks PBS to Hold Hearings on VELCO

DERBY - The Derby Selectboard unanimously decided to sign a document addressed to the Public Service Board (PSB) requesting that they hold hearings on the Vermont Electric Company (VELCO) statewide radio project.
Beula- Jean Shattuck was absent from the meeting Monday evening.
The hope, according to selectboard member Karen Jenne, is that the hearings are held locally for public comment.
The motion to sign the document came with some controversy and negotiations. Jenne presented the letter to the board, which included the phrase, "The town wishes to comment further."

Pomerleau Preps for Christmas Party

NEWPORT CITY – For much of the year, Tony Pomerleau is known for his business ventures in the forms of commercial real estate. During the holiday season, however, people call him Santa Claus.
"This year, the party will be bigger and better than ever," he told the Newport Daily Express.
For 30 years, Pomerleau has held a holiday party for needy families from the Burlington area. For the past three years, Pomerleau, who grew up in Newport, has hosted a similar party for families of the Northeast Kingdom. 

Canaan Wins 4-3 in OT Against Craftsbury

CRAFTSBURY – The Craftsbury Academy Lady Chargers suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss against Canaan Memorial High School. After leading 1-0 at the half thanks to an Olivia Jones goal, the game was a see-saw affair moving forward. Shortly after Canaan tied the game at 1, Melanie Sergiev put the Chargers on top once again, 2-1. Canaan High continued to fight and knotted the game at 2-2 with just over 20 minutes remaining.

Cougars Top Falcons 2-0

JERICHO– The North Country Boys soccer team had a tough go of it on Tuesday when thy fell to the Mount Mansfield Cougars 2-0 on the road.
The Falcons battled hard for the the first 65 minutes before things came undone in the final fifteen minutes.
An intentional handball inside the box lead to one of the Cougar goals, as Cody Simoneau got his hand on the ball. The call usually results in an automatic red card and an ejection for the remainder of the game, and it did.
For Chris Bronson.
That would be lucky break number one for Simoneau.

Hazen Completes Season Series Sweep of Lake Region

ORLEANS– The winds blew cold and hard at Ranger field on Wednesday as the Hazen girls soccer team came in and completed the season series sweep with a 2-1 win over Lake Region.
"We played great the last twenty minutes. If we can learn to play that way all the time we would be a much better team," said Coach Brad Urie, "They are a young team and I don't think they understand the type of intensity you have to bring to the field."
