Fishing for Ducks

NEWPORT, VT - The Newport Rotary Club held its annual Duck Regatta in Gardner Park under cold and rainy skies Sunday.
Lapierre and Sons’ duck came in first and won $1,000. Pierre Legacy won $500, Bob Bigelow won $300, Danielle Carpenter won $200 and Frank Chaput won $100. Bill Gardyne and Alan Dauphin braved the nasty weather to fish hundreds of plastic ducks out of the Clyde River.

New Derby Planner From Derby Line

DERBY- The Derby Selectboard last week named a new planner to fill a vacancy. Former Planner Cynthia Adams resigned due to a conflict of meeting times.
The new member of the planning commission is Brian Fisher of Derby Line.
Fisher comes on board in the midst of the ongoing controversial issue of a proposed mini mart and gas station in Derby Line.

Jay Peak Settles EPA Suit - Fined $80,000

JAY, VT - Jay Peak Resort has agreed to pay $80,000 for wetlands violations to settle claims by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that it violated the federal Clean Water Act when it filled in just over two acres of wetlands and streams and failed to obtain proper permits from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Brighton Soccer Field Vandalized

ISLAND POND - Students and teachers arriving at school in Brighton Friday morning were greeted with a nasty surprise. Around 2 a.m., someone vandalized the town’s only soccer field by spinning vehicle tires deep into the wet ground. This caused many ruts and unsafe playing conditions.
Brighton soccer team Coach Bill Burns said a home game scheduled for today against Canaan has been postponed, however a tournament scheduled for Saturday at the field is still on. He is hopeful the damage can be repaired by then.

Snow Tires Point to Burglar

NEWPORT CITY – A would-be thief looking for video games will serve three to six months in prison, all suspended except 75 days. Fifteen of those days are five consecutive weekends beginning Oct. 14. 
On Thursday, Jared Stanzione, 31, of Derby Line, entered a plea of guilty to a felony charge of burglary of an occupied dwelling and a misdemeanor charge of petty larceny of $500 or less.

Frances Colladay

Colladay–– Frances, 75, of Mountaintop, PA, passed away Thursday, September 29, 2011 after a critical illness at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Memorial donations may be sent to the American Red Cross. McCune Funeral Service Inc., 80 S. Mountain Blvd., Mountain Top has been entrusted with the arrangements.

North Country Rolls Over Vikings, 62-22

NEWPORT-The North Country Falcons scored on every possession series as they amassed eight touchdowns in an impressive display of offensive dominance producing 62 total points. Senior tailback Nick LeClair had the biggest night of all as he piled up 172 yards on the ground including hitting paydirt four times in the contest as NCU pile drived the visiting Lyndon Institute Vikings 62-22.
