Storm Slashes Bridges, Roads, Tracks

NORTHEAST KINGDOM – Tropical storm Irene hit the region Sunday leaving behind what some are calling historic flooding. “It was probably as high as I've ever seen it,” said Orleans Fire Chief Ron Hoyt. “It came up pretty fast. It went up two feet in 20 minutes.”
Flooding from the Barton River prompted firefighters to respond to Blanchard Oil and the Ethan Allen Manufacturing Plant in Orleans Village late Sunday evening.

Newport City Loses Former Mayor and City Manager, and Friend

Kenneth W. Magoon, 74, beloved husband of Judy Magoon, passed away on Friday, August 26, 2011 in Lebanon, NH, after a long illness. He was born on October 16, 1936, in Newport, VT, to Guy and Ester (Geer) Magoon. 
He graduated from Newport High School in 1955 and entered the Air Force shortly after for a four-year enlistment including spending a year in Japan. After leaving the service, he joined the securities firm of Harris, Upham and Company, Inc. of Boston.
He married Judith Hill in 1960. In 1971 he worked for  Meddendorff, Colgate and Co., also located in Boston. 

30 Years Up Close with the Boston Celtics - It All Started In Vermont For Jeff Twiss

NEWPORT, VT – Jeff  Twiss made it back to his roots on Saturday night. The Boston Celtics' Vice President of Media Services, and now a 30-year veteran of the Celtic family, Twiss made his way back to Newport as he spoke at the annual Orleans County Northern Essex County Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet at Newport’s American Legion Hall. His father, Bob Twiss, who accompanied Jeff, is a 2008 Hall of Fame inductee who still resides in Orleans County, making his home in Craftsbury.

Thunder on the Mountain

JAY, VT – On Saturday, 73 motorcyclists throughout New England paid $45 each to take part in the 143-mile ride that ended on Jay Peak, and another three dozen or so people paid an additional fee to ride along on the back of the motorcycles. The proceeds from the annual event, known as the Kingdom Thunder Motorcycle Rally, will benefit IROC’s Healthy Changes Initiative.
IROC’s Healthy Changes Initiative is a discounted membership and exercise program for people who suffer from chronic conditions as well as members 65 years of age and older.
