August 23, 2011

DERBY - Brian Smith, Chairman of the Derby Select Board, said the board is not going to issue a recommendation on behalf of the Vermont Electric Company (VELCO) to the Public Service Board (PSB) by Sept. 1. VELCO had agreed to postpone submitting their application for a Certificate of Public Good to the PSB at the request of town officials.
However, Smith said he is considering a discussion with each member of the select board in an open meeting and then sending comments to the PSB during the comment period following the filing by VELCO.

Orleans County Fair a Huge Success

August 23, 2011

BARTON, VT - The 144th Annual Orleans County Fair came to a crashing end last Sunday evening, Aug. 21, as the Demolition Derby crashed its way to a winner.
For the first time in the history of the fair, cars started the fair and ended it. Who would have thought that enough Cadillacs would show up to break the world record of Caddies in one parade?

Burglars Get More Brazen

August 22, 2011

DERBY - Burglars seem to be getting more brazen by the moment, and burglaries more prolific, based on Vermont State Police crime reports.
Recently, a Holland man was attacked from behind with a blunt object by an accomplice when the victim tried to stop one of the burglars from ransacking the shed. And despite the arrest of two suspects in a number of area burglaries, the crimes continue.

Demo Drivers Slip and Slide to Victory

August 22, 2011

BARTON – Heavy rain on Sunday failed to dampen the fun of the last day of the Orleans County Fair.
In fact, the rain seemed to add to the excitement of the demolition derby as drivers smashed cars while trying to maneuver a muddy, slippery track.
The excitement was heightened by lightning, thunder and a hard rain, but overcast skies only eased weekend’s grilling heat.
In between events, a few individuals rolled around in the mud for cash prizes while hungry fans chowed down on treats sold by area Boy Scouts or purchased from the assortment of vendors at the fair.
