STANSTEAD, QUE. - Despite the bad springtime weather and Tropical Storm Irene, the overall apple crop is doing well, at least in this area.
“From what I’ve seen, the apples are looking great,” said Koi Boynton, agricultural development coordinator for the Vermont Agency of Agriculture.
NEWPORT, VT - Tim Daley of Newport last year took over as host and coordinator of the annual Newport Christmas Dinner. The event has been held at the American Legion Post 21 in Newport for more than 20 years.
This year, for the 28th annual dinner, Daley decided that he would not have the party at the Legion with out a lift to assist individuals in getting up the stairs. Daley also said that he would help in the fundraising effort to make the lift a reality.
SHEFFIELD, VT - An oil leak from a turbine on the Sheffield Wind Project now under construction has been cleaned up, according to a spokesperson for First Wind, the Boston, MA, company developing the project.
Officials are blaming the leak on a mechanical problem. A tube inside a gear box leaked about 55 gallons of oil. The leak was discovered on Saturday.
First Wind sought help from an environmental clean-up group from St. Johnsbury.
The turbine is one of 16 recently installed for the wind project, which is nearing completion.

NEWPORT - Area youth had an opportunity to check out the big rigs at the Gateway Center on Saturday.
Here, Newport City Fire Chief Jamie LeClair shows off the city's newest fire engine and provides the young people with coloring books.
The youngsters with LeClair included Andrew Parrish, Kelby McMunus and Brandon Parish.
NEWPORT CITY – In Orleans District Court Tuesday, Amanda Parker, 22, of Albany, entered a plea of not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of reckless endangerment; and Todd Medeiros, 49, of Barton, entered a not guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct - fight.
Judge Robert Bent released both defendants on conditions.
NEWPORT CITY – To meter or not to meter? That is the question. In November, Newport City voters will have a chance to answer that question. On Monday night, the Newport City Council held the third and final required public hearing regarding the topic.
A public vote will likely be held early in November.
Some tenants who live in Newport City recently received a letter dated Sept. 23, 2011 asking them to register to vote. The letter, provided by Express sources, is unsigned and says it is "to all renters in Newport from landlords."

We lost our first game to Winooski, with a score of 3-0. I actually thought we had some great effort by our players in that game. We were really just outmatched physically - Winooski's roster includes 12 Juniors or Seniors, compared to our 4. Size and strength was a big factor in that game, along with our inexperience. However, every situation is a chance to learn and improve, and that, we are doing.
Singer–– Joanne, 68, of Troy, Vermont, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, September 24, 2011 with her loving family members present, after a long illness.
