RED CROSS NEEDS YOU

October 8, 2012

NEWPORT, VT - Thinking about donating some of your time to help others, but not sure where? Why not consider the American Red Cross?
The Red Cross needs volunteers to be part of the disaster response team in the Northeast Kingdom. The response team typically responds to fires and floods, bringing food and drinks to the firefighters and helping the victims with shelter, clothes and food.
The Red Cross loses 30 to 35 percent of volunteers annually due to personal, conflicting commitments.

PAUL’S TURNS 40

October 7, 2012

DERBY – For 40 years, area residents flocked to Paul’s Sugar House dance hall to shake their booty. Yesterday, all those dedicated fans paid tribute to what has become a local institution.
Paul and Rhina Letourneau opened the dance hall in 1972. The hall was a dream of Rhina but she passed away in 1979. Paul, with the help of family members, kept his wife’s dream alive. Paul's son Leo is pleased the dream continues. He said his father loves the business and spends a lot of time there.

The select board had held a vote on the issue Monday evening at their regular select board meeting but there were not enough votes to make the appointment. Dolgin was not present Monday. Jenne and Shattuck abstained from the vote Monday as well.

Falcons Dominate U-32, But Settle for 1-1 Tie

October 7, 2012

NEWPORT–The final varsity game of the Maniatty weekend saw the North Country (6-3-1) and U-32 (4-2-3) girls battle it out in front of a loud and supportive mix of Falcon Faithful and Raider Nation.
The weather would go from wet, to dry, from cold to warm, back to cold but try as they might, neither team could break the 1-1 deadlock, so after 100 minutes of action, the two teams were forced to settle for the tie.
"We had a good effort," said coach Peter Alexander. "There was a little too much kickball, but they played hard and it was a gutsy effort."

Falcons Fall Short, Lose 2-1 to MMU in Wild Match

October 7, 2012

NEWPORT–North Country (2-7-1) and Mount Mansfield (8-2) engaged in one slobber-knocker of a soccer game on Friday afternoon.
Bodies flying, yellow cards, red cards, screaming and yelling; It was awesome.
Sadly the Falcons lost the match in OT 2-1, but they got their money's worth out of the Cougars, that is for sure.
"It's a tough loss," said coach James McKenny. "They (MMU) capitalized when they needed to and that is the way the game goes. They have to feel pretty lucky getting out of here with a win."

Falcons Show Improvement in 55-20 Loss to Bellows Falls

October 7, 2012

NEWPORT–They say practice makes perfect, but while they are not perfect, nor did they get the win, the North Country football team's hard work paid off as they had their best showing in four weeks, breaking a three game scoreless streak in a 55-20 loss to Bellows Falls on Friday night.
"We made some adjustments and kept drilling them all week and it is starting to pay off," said head coach Tim Simoneau.
Jason Hatin returned to the Falcon line-up, but it was Jacob Buckles under center as North Country started the first series of the game from their own thirty.

Ranger Boys Blank Richford for Eighth Win

October 7, 2012

ORLEANS-Lake Region picked up their fourth shutout of the season, upending visiting Richford 4-0 in boys varsity soccer action Friday afternoon in the opening contest of the Rangers’ homecoming weekend.
Josh Thibault, Shaquille Urie, Anthony Wright and Alex Beauregard tallied for the Rangers with each score coming in the first half. Thibault and fellow junior Carl Oberg added one assist each.
“When you score early and often, you sometimes get out of your game plan,” said Lake Region head coach Tom Evans. “But Richford played hard, and that made it a good a match throughout.”

Urie Breaks Record in Lady Rangers 4-0 Win Over Danville

October 7, 2012

ORLEANS–Tyrah Urie scored her 37th career goal with 25:00 left to play in the second half to break the Lake Region girl's goal scoring record on Saturday afternoon.
The tally was the Lady Rangers (9-2) third of their 4-0 win over Danville (2-6-1).
Lake Region got on the board in the first half when Megan Menard put one in with nine minutes remaining in the opening forty.
Thirteen minutes into the second, Urie off of a strange play in the corner, sent a cross in front to Sarah Burnham, who netted her first goal of the season.
