DOWN ON THE FARM

November 14, 2012

BARTON – The aroma of burgers, coffee and farm animals filled the air on the Kinsey Road yesterday as auctioneer Reg Lussier auctioned off about 160 head of cattle at Northeast Kingdom Sales. Lussier also auctioned pigs and a couple of horses.
Jim Young, co-owner of Northeast Kingdom Sales, said the cattle were on consignment. Northeast Kingdom Sales used to have such auctions every month, but now holds them every other month. The price of cattle at auction depends on current milk prices. Young expected 60 to 70 farmers at Wednesday’s auction.

November 14, 2012

DERBY – Salem Lake in Derby has a clean bill of health once again; nothing has gotten past the watchful eye of the lake monitors, patrollers, and professional diver Shawn Bickford. But its future remains uncertain because of all the risks in surrounding areas.
Several lakes in Vermont are contaminated with invasive species, including Lake Memphremagog and Lake Champlain.

Will Vermont Have Its Own "Keystone" Pipeline?

November 14, 2012

NEWPORT, VT- The issues of energy production and independence were among several hot topics during the just concluded election cycle, with President Barack Obama and challenger Governor Mitt Romney debating the need for Canadian tar-sands oil and the proposed pipeline called Keystone XL.
Tar-sands oil is not just relegated to states far away, however. An existing pipeline, which runs through the heart of the Northeast Kingdom, may host the highly corrosive crude, carrying it over several watersheds and through the ecologically sensitive Victory Bog.

November 13, 2012

ORLEANS – The wrath of Hurricane Sandy hit home for QNEK's Lynn Leimer when the storm ravaged her beloved state of New Jersey.
The storm wreaked havoc on many of Vermont’s neighboring states, devastating homes, leaving neighborhoods underwater, and knocking out power to millions, but the storm skirted Vermont and the state recovered quickly, leaving Vermonters in a position to provide help to others in need.
A number of Vermonters, including state police, ambulance and utility workers, geared up and headed south to provide assistance.
