NEWPORT CITY – In the dark of the night, a large cruise ship made its way from Burlington to its new home on Lake Memphremagog Tuesday.
The 42-ton ship, soon to be renamed The Northern Star, will begin offering tours on the lake in the spring of 2013.
The boat is 65 feet long and holds 49 passengers.
Prior to operating on Lake Champlain, it ran on waterways in Virginia.
“What a project,” said Chris Johansen, president of the Memphremagog Navigation Company, as crews skillfully hoisted the ship off a large trailer.
CHARLESTON - A rapid moving fire destroyed a building at NorthWoods Stewardship Center Thanksgiving weekend.
Flames broke out in the boiler building around 8 p.m. Saturday November 24, and luckily someone was there to take action.
Northwoods Executive Director Jayson Benoit saw the fire, went for the fire extinguisher and called for help. The Charleston Fire Department responded and found the building fully engulfed in flames, said Duane Moulton, Charleston’s fire chief.
DERBY, VT - The North Country Union Junior High School has embarked on an ambitious project to create a walking path that will start behind the school and will border the soccer fields, providing a nice view of the elk farm and Derby Pond.
With a $10,000 fund available through a VEHI Path to Wellness program, which awards matching funds to schools for innovative projects, the Wellness Committee is engaged in fund-raising to pay the balance of the costs.
Total cost for the project is estimated at $31,500, which works out at $9 per foot of pathway.

NEWPORT–When was the last time you saw a member of the North Country basketball team dunk a ball?
In the three years since I have been covering the team I had yet to see it happen, but when I stopped by the NCU gym to chat with coach Brian Bonvechio, I finally saw it.
Freshman Kendrick Gray soared down the lane, went up, and came down with a thunderous one-handed slam, ushering in a new era and attitude of Falcon basketball.

NEWPORT–This year it is going to be about the doing the little things right for the North Country girl's basketball team.
"I emphasized to the girls that the little things are going to make a difference this season," said coach Christiane Brown. "Making our lay-ups, pushing the ball forward, not losing who we are guarding and finding a body to box out. The little things are going to be what puts us over the top this season.
"I want us to put points on the board, but it is going to be all of the things that lead up to that are what's important to me."
