BARTON – Fire displaced a family from their home Tuesday evening.
Firefighters responded to the Merrill and Emily Crawford residence at 150 Laurette Lane for a structure fire at 7:25 p.m.
Fire Chief David Clayes said a wood burning stove on the porch of the trailer caused the fire. The fire is not considered suspicious.
Firefighters had the blaze under control in less than five minutes. The trailer is a total loss. The fire got so hot that it melted a television set 20 feet away.

DON’T MESS WITH THE PRESS

December 12, 2012

Emails indicate GMP wanted to avoid the publicity associated with arresting a journalist.

NEWPORT – Just days before the start of the trial of Chris Braithwaite, the state abruptly dropped the trespassing charge against him, claiming that emails from GMP had nothing to do with the dismissal. However those emails seemed to indicate that GMP implicitly permitted Braithwaite to be on the property.

December 12, 2012

NEWPORT–The North Country girls basketball team opened up their season in fine fashion, defeating the Lyndon Institute Vikings 56-29 on Tuesday evening.
Coach Christiane Brown utilized her entire roster in the win, something that should provide a good springboard for the rest of the season.
"We are going to win as a team and we are going to lose as a team, from the five girls on the floor to the ladies on the bench," said Brown after the game. "I really emphasize the importance of us on the bench are the sixth players and the fans are the seventh."

PAYING THE PRICE

December 11, 2012

NEWPORT – The six protesters arrested on Lowell Mountain last December were in court Tuesday for a sentencing hearing.
Judge Martin Maley issued the sentence but delayed execution pending an appeal before the Vermont Supreme Court. If the defense loses the appeal, the sentence will be a $250 fine or 25 hours of community service.
Deputy State’s Attorney Sarah Baker asked for a $250 fine or two to three days on a work crew because it cost the state money to send deputies to Lowell Mountain to arrest the protesters.

Yesterday the duo sang at the Union House in Glover.
Marie Guertin, social services director for Union House, said Pronto and Choquette brought Christmas cheer to the residents. “I think it’s good for their well being and I think it will make them happy,” said Guertin. “I really thank them (Pronto and Choquette) for coming."

Craftsbury Academy Opens WWII Memorial Gymnasium

December 11, 2012

CRAFTSBURY–The moment I walked into the brand new World War II Memorial Gymnasium at Craftsbury Academy, the electricity was palpable.
Principal Merri Greenia was greeting fans at the door, dispensing tickets and programs with an extra twinkle in her eye.
And who could blame her.
After months of hard work, and weeks of anticipation, this was the big night, the night the entire community had waited for; The first home games of the 2012-2013 Craftsbury Academy basketball season.
And what a night it was.

SANTA IS COMING!

December 10, 2012

NEWPORT, VT - Mark Saturday as the day Santa comes to Newport.
Santa and his friends will be hosted by the city as part of the Magic on Main event. The city recreation department and the Renaissance Corporation have lined up wagon rides, shopping fun, activities and even real reindeer. (At least I think they're real.)
Main Street will be closed to traffic, so be prepared to park in the Hebard lot or other areas around town. Businesses will be open.

THE STRUGGLE TO STAY WARM

December 10, 2012

NEWPORT, VT - Nobody wants to be cold, but with current fuel prices and a poor economy, many Vermonters are finding themselves turning down the thermostat and putting on a sweater or two.
The Department of Children and Family Services (DCF) offers to help low income Vermonters pay their heating fuel bill. Clients may apply for assistance any time during the year. DCF issued benefits from late September to mid-March. Benefits are based on two factors: financial need and energy burden need.
