DERBYâ€“ Brutal weather conditions didnâ€™t stop nearly a thousand people from taking part in the eighth annual Northeast Fishing Derby. The event ran Thursday through Sunday afternoon. A banquet atÂ Wrightâ€™s Enterprises was held Saturday.Â
More than 900 entrants, including 160 youngsters, dropped a line in any of the 30-plus lakes and ponds in the Northeast Kingdom. This yearâ€™s tournament was up about 60 entries compared to past years, something Ron Wright, promoter and organizer, credits to advertising and word of mouth by past competitors.
DERBY LINE â€“ Union workers at Tivoly ratified a new contract Saturday at a vote held at the American Legion Newport Post #21. Workers voted to accept the contract 109 to 3 with 130 eligible voting members.
â€śIt was a huge turnout with a remarkable win,â€ť said Wally Watson, president of Local 1829, which is part of District IV. The organization belongs to the International Association of Machinists.
NEWPORTâ€“After coming close earlier in the week against CVU, the North Country girls finally picked up their fifth, and arguably biggest, win of the season, defeating a very good BFA St. Albans squad 49-37.
"It is important that when we get leads, we maintain leads," said coach Brown, "They (BFA) tied it up and our girls dug in and fought and showed that they had toughness and that they wanted it more."
From the opening tip, it looked like it was going to be a defensive battle as the points were few and far between.
Newportâ€“In girls action, the United Christian Academy Crusaders fell behind early to the Cabot Huskies, by a score of 12-7 at the end of the first and by 20-9 with 2 minutes to go in the half before UCA began to claw back.
A pair of Hannah Piette baskets and a 2 by Whitney Carter cut the score to 20-16 heading into the break.
Lake Region Wins its Regular Season Finale on the Road
Richford â€“ LR took to the road to face the Falcons of Richford Friday night and they walked away with an easy 42-17 victory.
Drew Gallup was the high scorer with 14 points.
After starting the season a dismal 1-8 the Rangers have rebounded to the tune of a 9-2 record to finish the season .500 at 10-10.
The Blue and White look to have locked up the 10 seed in the Division 2 playoffs, with a first round matchup on the road against the #7 seed Montpelier Solons. The official pairings however will be released later today.
