DERBY - Representatives from Newport City, Derby Town and local legislators met with Burlington developer Jeffrey Davis at the Cow Palace Monday evening to discuss bringing a Wal-Mart to the Newport Derby area.
The meeting was unofficial and Derby Select Board Chair Brian Smith, who somewhat moderated the informal gathering, asked if anyone objected having the press present and offered to hold the meeting at another time.
NEWPORT, VT - Conrad Masse, 76, of Craftsbury, pleaded innocent Tuesday to a charge of aggravated assault for shooting a friend of his during a bear hunting outing in Albany, VT, on Oct. 30 of last year. The charge states that the defendant "caused serious bodily injury to another recklessly under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life."
State Police reported that they were called to the scene of the shooting, which had occurred on the Urie Road in Albany, and arrived to find state fish and game wardens on the scene and conducting an investigation.
NEWPORTâ€“It is play-off time in the wonderful world of winter sports, and three of the four area high schools (UCA will not make a stab at the Division 4 basketball post-season this year) will get the second season underway today.
First up is the North Country boys basketball team.
The Falcons finished the year at 6-14, and their record earned them a date with top seeded Mount Mansfield Cougars in Jericho.
The Cougars were an impressive 19-1 in Division one action, and they provide a strong challenge for the Falcons.
Thomas–– Frances P., 97, passed away February 9, 2012 at Pine Heights of Brattleboro. At her request, there will be no service. Burial will take place in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport.
