February 8th
NORTH TROY – The General is coming to this small village on the Canadian Border. The Dollar General Store, that is.
Tuesday evening, the Troy Zoning Board granted a building permit for a 9,100 square foot store on East Main Street.
Dollar General is a variety store based out of Goodlettsville, Tenn.
Matt Casey, development manager for Zarembra Retail Company, told the commission the store operates from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week. Truck deliveries happen during business hours.
The main truck makes weekly deliveries. Other trucks, like from Coca Cola, arrive as needed.
NORTH TROY – Discussion over a recycling center caused fireworks at the Troy Planning Commission Tuesday.Â
The Towns of Troy and Jay want to make their temporary recycling center, located on Route 101, into a permanent center.
Dave Sanders, representing the Jay and Troy recycling boards, told the planning commission that the boards originally thought that they would move the center from its temporary location once the new sewer plant was complete. However, that idea has gone down the drain.

ORLEANS—The Lady Rangers of Lake Region played host to the Stowe Raiders Tuesday night, and after a shaky first quarter, the blue and white came alive and lit the opponent up to the tune of a 56-13 drubbing.
STOWE– On Tuesday, the North Country boys and girls snowboarding teams traveled to Stowe to take part in a slope side competition against four other schools. The day was cold, the rails were solid and the jumps were huge. When the snow had settled, the girls team tied for first place with Burr and Burton Academy, and were led by captains Gina Basiliere, who finished second and Anna Ghelli in third.
The boys team had a third place finish as a team, and they were paced by Justin Christopher's ninth place finish and Josh Brien, who rode in at the number twelve spot.
BASKETBALL
Essex Tops Falcons 44-34
ESSEX–The North Country girls had well played, hard fought game against the Essex Hornets, but in the end they came up on the short end of the stick, falling by ten 44-34.
"It was a great game," said coach Christiane Brown, "It was a back and forth, well controlled contest."
After being down by one 12-11 after one, the Falcons went on the attack to go up 21-16 at the half.
"We were super disciplined. By shortening the game we limited them from getting their running game going," said Brown.
Hill–– Anita M., 88, of Newport Center passed away on February 6, 2012 in Newport. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. NEWPORT, VT - Are you a Penguin Plunger? Do you dare to dive into the frigid waters of Lake Memphremagog in February? Are you the kind of person who finds roughing it - in a beat-your-chest, caveman kind of way - exhilarating? What are you doing Saturday?
With Lake Memphremagog's temperature hovering in the mid-30's (or lower), anticipation is building for the annual Penguin Plunge, Saturday, Feb. 11, at 1 PM at the Gateway Center in Newport.
DERBY- A Public Service Board (PSB) Pre-hearing Conference on the proposed Derby Wind Turbine development is scheduled for Feb. 13 in Montpelier.
Derby Select Board member Karen Jenne asked the board if she could attend the meeting as a board member, but not all board members were comfortable with the idea. Jenne has expressed her opposition to the project and many residents have also contacted Jenne expressing their concerns with the proposal.
Jenne has taken time to research the issues and has developed a list of questions for the developers of the project.
BRIGHTON - Mrs. Helen Wasuck shares her story, her time, her knowledge and her artifacts about Africa with the 7th and 8th grade Brighton Elementary School students.Â
This is how she tells her story:
“In 8th grade, a missionary who had worked in the Philippines came to my school to teach. She told the class stories about life in a far away country. I think that is when I decided that I would like to learn languages and work overseas.
During my university years, I studied French, Spanish, Russian and political science.
