COVENTRY – Vermont State Auditor Tom Salmon and Deputy State Auditor Joseph Juhasz told the select board Monday evening that the town needs better internal financial controls.
The biggest concern is that select board members don't know the answers that Salmon’s office says they should know. There are also concerns that one person handles all of the town’s finances. Salmon’s office discovered the weaknesses after sending the select board and clerk and treasurer Cindy Diaz a list of questions that had a yes, no, or I don’t know response.
OKEMO–The North Country Snowboard teams' wrapped up their season with the state meet at Okemo Mountain on Friday.
The boys took home fifth place, combining a 61 in Giant Slalom, 54 on the Half-pipe, and a Slope Style score of 76 for a total of 191 points.
Josh Brien's twenty-second place finish was the high-water mark for the Falcons in the slope competition. Justin Christopher was thirty-second, Nick Kincaid thirty-eighth, Mike LeMay forty-sixth, and Chuck Norton fifty-fifth.

DERBY, VT - A recount was held Monday night for the position of Derby Delinquent Tax Collector after Assistant Town Clerk MaryAnn Tetreault beat out Town Clerk Nicole Daigle by two votes at March Town Meeting.
The final tally added one vote to Tetreault's total for a final count of Tetreault - 518 and Daigle -515.
Daigle was the incumbent.
CRAFTSBURY – There is no distance between where history ends and where it begins. Such was the case at Craftsbury Academy while the hardwood floor of the gymnasium was being auctioned off by part and parcel.
The floor was taped off in different sizes. The center of the floor had been removed so that a person could buy an autographed piece as well as some of the seating from the bleachers.
But it wasn’t just about bricks and mortar, or boards and nails. People wanted to take with them a part of what they left behind. Every inch of the place held a memory and everyone had a story to tell.
NEWPORT CITY — Fire didn't knock Little Gnesta Bed and Breakfast out of business.
Firefighters responded to the business on Prospect Street at 4 p.m., Sunday, for a report of a fire in the window well. Upon arrival, they found heavy smoke coming from the second floor and flames around the window. They prevented the fire from entering the attic space and contained the fire to the second floor bedroom.
ORLEANS, VT - Chief Lone Cloud, also known as Ralf Swett, reported that the Feathers store on Main Street in Orleans was burglarized last Thursday night.
The culprits broke one of the front doors and ransacked the place. An estimated $10,000 in items was taken, including all the computers. The store was also trashed.
NEWPORT CITY – A new state hospital is on the minds of many Vermont lawmakers. Both Sen. Vince Illuzzi (R-Orleans/Essex) and Rep. Lynn Batchelor covered the topic in detail during yesterday’s Legislative Breakfast held at the Eastside Restaurant.
Last year floodwaters caused extensive damage to the Vermont State Hospital as well as other buildings at the state complex in Waterbury. Legislators now have the task of finding replacement facilities.
