Thiel–– Joan M. (Maiers), 79, of Lititz PA, formerly of Newport at 182 Blanchard Avenue, died peacefully on Sunday, February 19, 2012 at United Zion Home in Lititz. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, February 23, 2012 at St. James Catholic Church, Lititz, PA, with the Rev. James O’Blaney C.Ss.R., as celebrant. Condolences may be sent to Robert E. Thiel at 20 Pinewood Avenue, Lititz, PA 17543.

BARTON - Eugene Atwood and four-month-old Brooklyn Darling came out to cheer on the Lady Rangers during their 50-34 win over BFA-Fairfax. Full story on page six of Thurday's Newport Daily Express.
DERBY, VT - Three members of the Derby Select Board met last Friday night and voted unanimously to file as interveners with the Public Service Board in the matter of Encore Redevelopment and the Derby Line wind project.
Brian Smith, the chairman, was absent that night but, according to select board member Karen Jenne, Smith called the other board members to voice his support for intervention. Jenne, Beula-Jean Shattuck, and Steven Gendreau all voted yes.
In addition to Derby Town, the Town of Holland and the Villages of Derby Line and Derby Center also decided to file as interveners.
NEWPORT TOWN – Most articles passed with little to no discussion in Newport Town Tuesday night. This includes the $2.5 million school budget. Prior to the vote, school board member Glenn Foster did a Power Point presentation that explained the revenues and expenses that showed a surplus. Ernest Choquette asked why the board is asking for an increase when the school has a surplus. The answer came from School Board Chair Wilma Therrien.
EDEN, VT - In a resounding vote, the residents of the Town of Eden decided to not have the asbestos mine declared an EPA Superfund site.
After a very brief presentation by Lynn Noah highlighting the issues that were raised at two prior public hearings, the moderator called for a vote. The vote, by paper ballot, had three favoring the designation and 106 in opposition.
ISLAND POND, VT - After 31 years, the Town of Brighton has a new town clerk and treasurer.
Teresa Potwin emerged as the winner in a contested race for these positions.
With 344 votes, Potwin defeated challengers Tracy Acebo (8 votes), Robin Castonguay (66 votes), and Jennifer Hanlon (34 votes) for the position of town clerk. Potwin also received 321 votes for town treasurer, besting Acebo (8 votes), Castonguay (80 votes) and Hanlon (34 votes).

ORLEANS–After a slow starting first, Lake Region was able to pick up their play in the remaining three quarters, rolling to 50-34 win over BFA-Fairfax in the opening round of the Division Two girls basketball play-offs.
"I think early on we were a little unsettled, a little uneasy, but I thought we settled in and obviously Drew, she knocked down some shots that were huge when we needed them and it was great to have that," said coach Mark Tinker.
Granbury, TX–– Larry Maurice Perry, 62, of Granbury, Texas died Wednesday, February 22, 2012 surrounded by family. Celebration of life: 2 p.m. Sunday, April 22 at the Celebration Community Church in Fort Worth.

DERBY, VT - Derby Town displayed a high voter turnout yesterday with 33 percent of the 3085 registered voters casting ballots.
In the tightest and surprisingly hottest race in town, Maryann Tetreault squeaked out a 2-vote lead over Nicole Daigle for delinquent tax collector, at 516 to 514. No other race was challenged.
The budgets for Derby Elementary School and for North Country senior and junior high schools passed easily. The elementary school numbers were 680 yes to 320 no; junior high was 639 yes to 349 no; and senior high was 603 yes to 390 no.
