HOLLAND â€“ The Holland Select Board held a special meeting Tuesday evening for a question and answer session with Derby Line wind project developer Chad Farrell of Encore Redevelopment.
Residents seemed to hold nothing back when expressing their concerns over the project.
Farrell remained diplomatic while he attempted to provide thorough answers to all questions and concerns raised.
NEWPORT CITY â€“ The Newport City Council took no action Monday on a request to renew Griffâ€™s Pub Class 1 and 2 liquor license.
The council renews such liquor licenses every year. Normally licenses sail through the council with ease, but some city officials are concerned about recent problems with the popular downtown hangout.
Police Chief J. Paul Duquette, who reviews all liquor licenses before the council looks at them, said there had been some serious incidents at the pub over the past year.
ORLEANS, VT - Desmarais Equipment of Orleans is closing its doors after 49 years.
Brothers Rene and Roger Desmarais owned the farm equipment and power sports store and are now ready to retire. The business was opened by their father Rio Desmarais in 1963. Rio Desmarais had been a farmer and then went to work at farm equipment stores. He developed a dream to open his own store. The place that has housed Desmarais for all these years became available and Rio Desmarais fulfilled his dream.
NEWPORT, VT - Newport Car Wash is hosting a raffle this Saturday to benefit the young son of murder victim Melissa Jenkins.
Jenkins was killed a few weeks ago in the St. Johnsbury area and her three-year-old son was found in her car, with the engine still running, near the murder scene.
The items include toys, gifts and certificates donated from area businesses.
There will also be a bottle drive and food for purchase.
The gas pumps will have full service with all tips being donated to Robertson.
BOSTON â€“ Derby native Nicholas Wheeler made the region proud, yesterday, by finishing 35th in the Boston Marathon. Wheeler, now of Rockland, ME, finished the 26.2-mile marathon in 2:33:30.
The Boston Marathon is a world-class competition that draws tens of thousands of athletes from around world.
Wheeler is no stranger to marathon competition. Last fall he finished ninth in the Philadelphia Marathon.
Wheeler, a 2004 graduate of North Country Union High School, was a member of the school's track team and cross country team.
NEWPORT CITY â€“ Thereâ€™s no doubt that firefighting has changed over the years. To keep up with the latest changes, firefighters from both sides of the border converged at the North Country Career Center Saturday and Sunday for the annual fire school.
The Northeast International Mutual Aid Association sponsored the event. This year, members from 12 departments attended the school. The majority of the firefighters were from the Orleans County area, however, some were from Woodbury, VT, and Mansonville, Beebe and Stanstead, Quebec.
ST. ALBANSâ€“The Lake Region track and field team headed over Franklin County to participate in a BFA hosted meet at the Collins-Pearly Complex.
The Rangers had a strong showing with the girls placing second and the boys taking home third.
