Lola Aiken Gets Her Day

MONTPELIER - Lola Aiken, the iconic matriarch of the Vermont Republican Party, turned 100 this week and celebrated with a multi-partisan bash at the Vermont State House.
Mrs. Aiken is the widow of George Aiken, who was well respected by politicians and citizens of the state during his tenure in Vermont politics. George Aiken, who died in 1984, served in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1931-1935, as Lieutenant Governor from 1934-1936, Governor from 1937-1941, and a member of the U.S. Senate for 34 years, from 1941-1975.

Village Clerk “Ambushed” in “Other Business”

DERBY - "Other business" turned into a tense and sometimes heated discussion at Monday's Derby Select Board meeting as board member Karen Jenne came under fire by board chairman Brian Smith and Derby Line Village Trustee Perry Hunt. Jenne serves as the village clerk for Derby Line as well as a member of the Derby Select Board.

Health Care Choices are in Patients’ Hands

NEWPORT CITY – Andy Carter, President and CEO of Visiting Nurses Associations of America (VNAA), was in town this week to meet with officials from area associations. 
Carter’s visit included a trip to some of the most rural areas of Essex County with representatives from Orleans/Northern Essex VNA and Hospice (ONEVNA). They also had a round table discussion at the ONEVNA office Tuesday morning. 

Derby Planners Approve Adult Store Zoning Regs

DERBY – The Derby Planning Commission has approved regulations on adult-oriented businesses for the town; however the decision was not unanimous. Planner Dave LaBelle voted the motion down while all others said yes. The new regulations require that any adult-oriented business locate in specific areas and not be near other entities such as schools and churches and not in residential areas.
A public hearing was held June 18 on the zoning bylaw amendment.

Charleen Ida Bronson (Wood), 63 of Morgan, Vermont died peacefully on June 24, 2012 with her husband and family close by. Her death was caused by complications related to cancer. She was born on May 18, 1949 in Derby, Vermont, daughter of the late Wilfred and Goldie Wood. She married Arnold (Pete) Bronson in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1969.
