Lake Region Cuts Almost $16K in Energy Bills

ORLEANS – Thanks to the Whole School Energy Challenge, Lake Region Union High School reduced its energy consumption by 25 percent, saving taxpayers $15,885, and that was enough to make it the top school in a pilot program.
Efficiency Vermont, Vermont Superintendents Association School Energy Management Program and the Vermont Energy Education Program partnered in the program that ran from May 2011 to April 2012.

Mulkin Seeks Tax Break on Newport Property

NEWPORT CITY – Monday evening the council approved a request by Jim Mulkin of JM & MM, for a six-year tax stabilization.
Mulkin wants to build a new 14,000 square foot building on Duchess Street and add a small addition to an existing building, which currently houses Northeast Kingdom Human Services (NKHS).

Local Author Promotes New Book At Woodknot Bookshop

NEWPORT – Dawn Gray, who is no stranger to the Northeast Kingdom, grew up in Island Pond and she used to deliver papers for the Newport Daily Express. She is now a well-known author and is promoting her newly published book “S.P.I.R.I.T: Fire Storm.”
She will be at the Woodknot Bookshop this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to sign copies and to discuss any questions you may have about the paranormal.
Gray has published several books that cover many areas of the paranormal and the supernatural, including her first self-published book “Raven” and a 7-book series “Vampire Legacy.”

IROC lays out aggressive financial plan

DERBY - Indoor Recreation of Orleans County (IROC) is in the midst of serious financial trouble.
Phil White, the executive director, is making an aggressive effort to stave off foreclosure and keep the doors open with the hope of creating a thriving facility someday. White continues to work without pay.
IROC is in debt for $1.1 million to Community National Bank and U.S. Rural Development and has been unable to make payments. White has sent a letter to each entity and explained a strategic plan to save IROC and to ask for more time to see it through before foreclosure.

Brooks–– Lincoln Lee, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2012 at Longhouse Residence in Spencer, at the age of 91. Services will be Friday, June 8 at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. William Schreiber officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer, Iowa. Arrangements by Warner Funeral Home, Spencer, Iowa (www.warnerfuneralhome.com).
