DERBY – More serious problems have come to light with the ancient water system in the Village of Derby Line. Not only is the water dirty with rust and other residue, but low water pressure is hampering firefighters when trying to put out fires.
The home of Debbie Perry caught fire in the early morning hours Saturday. Eighteen Derby Line firefighters responded to the seen with five trucks after receiving a call at 3:20 a.m., Derby Line Fire Chief Craig Ellam said Sunday.
COVENTRY – The thrills at the Newport State Airport this weekend were unbelievable as Lakeview Aviation held its fourth annual air show. The show included stunt flying, airplane displays, airplane rides, a Mustang display and a bounce house for kids. Hundreds of people showed up Saturday and Sunday to enjoy the daring displays.
“Everybody has a thing for planes,” said Dan Gauvin, owner of Lakeview Aviation. Part of the purpose for the show is to grow interest in aviation. “This is a state airport. People think it’s for the rich but it’s not; it’s the taxpayer’s airport.”
LOWELL - Green Mountain Power has announced that the first turbine at the Kingdom Community Wind Project in Lowell has been erected.
"We've made tremendous progress on the project the last couple of months and are eagerly anticipating the project's commissioning," said Mary Powell, President and CEO of Green Mountain Power. "The mild winter allowed us to ramp construction back up in early April and we've been steadily moving forward since then. Today marks an important milestone in our effort to develop this clean, renewable energy for Vermont."

DERBY LINE – Developer William Simendinger continues to argue his case to build a mini-mart and gas station where two historic buildings stand on Main Street in Derby Line’s commercial district.
Simendinger, vice president of Champlain Farms (a gas station/mini-mart chain) bought the two buildings quietly a few years ago and revealed his plans for the property later.
Controversy has dogged the project since the beginning.
NEWPORT - It's unusual for a sitting governor to feel heat from an opponent following one term in office, but that seems to be the case as Vermont State Senator Randy Brock takes on Democratic incumbent Gov. Peter Shumlin.
Brock, a Republican, is capitalizing on the political bruising Shumlin has taken recently for decisions on the Lowell Mountain Wind Project, the Gaz Metro/Central Vermont Public Service (CVPS) deal (which essentially overturned an agreement between the state and the utility to reimburse rate payers $21 million), and an incident involving a bear in the night.
DERBY - Derby could win $25,000 in the Pet Safe "Bark for Your Park contest." Derby is trailing Mountain House, CA, and was in second place when the leader board/vote counter went dark this week, adding suspense. But Derby was trailing by about 1,000 votes.
The park is coming to life now, but the money means the difference between a bare bones park, or a very nice one for anyone from anywhere to use for free.

NEWPORT CITY – When Eileen Illuzzi became the new interim director of the North Country Career Center earlier this month, she left somewhat of a void with the school’s adult services program.
However, thanks to the Northeast Kingdom Learning Services (NEKLS), the void will be short lived.
NEKLS will help with the program that Illuzzi will continue to oversee. Illuzzi has a Vermont Department of Education state license as an Adult Services Coordinator as well as Career Center Director. The Department of Education is okay with the arrangement, at least for now.

NEWPORT–Anthony Bathalon is ready to make the next step in his basketball career; Teacher.
The former high school standout, who also dabbled in semi-pro ball as a practice player with the Frost Heaves as well as playing with the Little Rock Lightning of the ABA, has decided to switch his playing kicks for a set of coaches shoes and a whistle.

Riverside Speedway is home to some of the friendliest, most helpful people in the racing business. If a racer is in need, there are usually five people jumping to help. This is especially important in the higher divisions, where higher speeds sometimes bring bigger problems. A helpful hand is always welcome, and one of the first people to lend a hand is the Northeast Kingdom’s Aaron Smith.
The Irasburg native drives a mint green Chevy Impala in the Sign Depot Outlaw Sportsman division, but hasn’t always been privy to racing.
August 5, 1940-July 22, 2012
Brian Albert Goulet, 71, passed away suddenly in a tragic accident on July 22, 2012, while working on his beloved farm. He was born August 5, 1940 in Vermont to Albert Joseph Goulet and Beatrice Nugent Goulet and was raised in Island Pond, Vt.
Brian graduated from Brighton High School in Island Pond, served in the U.S. Army and, shortly after being discharged from the military, he met the love of his life, Judith Flow. Brian married Judith on July 7, 1962; they recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Vermont with family.
