The Newport Country Club Ladies League Susan B. Komen Invitational will take place on Thursday, July 26th at the Newport Country Club. Between 80 and 100 participants are expected to take part in this year’s event. Last year the event raised $ 7,000 for North Country Hospital.

DERBY LINE/STANSTEAD - Criminal activity has increased on Church Street, an open road that connects Derby Line, VT and Stanstead, Quebec. According to Canadian authorities, there is an increase in illegal entry into Canada.
Now the international border on Church Street is lined with large flower pots, a temporary solution to a growing problem.
GUILDHALL – Escorting large tractor-trailers from Island Pond to Lowell means extra money for the Essex County Sheriff's Department.
The department is responsible for escorting trucks of Lone Star Transportation, which are hauling the wind tower parts that came into Island Pond by rail. Other law enforcement agencies are escorting trucks that come in from neighboring states.
The trucking company estimates just over 120 trips will be made between Island Pond and Lowell.
NEWPORT CITY – Question: What’s blue, white, yellow, and comes with flashing lights? Answer: Newport Ambulance Service’s newest ambulance.
The 2012, Ford E-450 chassis with a Demers box arrived in Newport yesterday. Demers made the box at the Beloeil, Quebec, factory.
The new ambulance replaces Newport Ambulance #2, made in 2003, that got into an accident on the Causeway last November.
“It was damaged beyond repair,” said Jay Wood, divisional manager for Newport Ambulance Service. “That’s why we got another one.”

STANSTEAD, QC - Vermonters who commute through the north end of Stanstead may have recently noticed a familiar establishment no longer exists on Fairfax Street. The Imperial Motel, a landmark that overlooked Autoroute 55 since the 1960s, has been demolished. Plans to tear down the vacant motel were announced in early 2012 and the building finally came down in late June.
All that now stands is a mass of rubble.
NEWPORT - Three weeks ago, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld most of President Barack Obama’s health care law, called the Affordable Care Act, one of the most anticipated and controversial decisions in many years. The new law, dubbed “Obama Care,” which includes many changes, prohibits insurance companies from withholding coverage based on a pre-existing condition, allows children to stay on their parents’ policy until the age of 26, and requires that all individuals will have health insurance coverage or faces a new tax.
What does this mean locally?
MONTPELIER – William “Bill” Sorrell, identified by Wikipedia as the longest serving attorney general in the history of the United States, hopes to retain his footprint in history. Gov. Howard Dean appointed Sorrell to the Attorney General’s office in 1997 to replace Jeffrey Amestoy, who was appointed Chief Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court.
Sorrell has won the race ever since.

NEWPORT–No matter which way you looked at it, a Griffith was going to emerge as one half of the winning duo in this year's Newport Daily Express Member/Guest Tournament.
Sunday's final came down to brother versus brother as Dan Griffith and his partner Denis Fortin squared off against Dave Griffith and his partner Dan Barry.
Fortin and Griffith won the August National Flight, while Barry and Griffith topped out in the St. Andrews grouping.
