NEWPORT – The man accused of driving a huge tractor over seven Orleans County Sheriff's vehicles denied all charges against him in Orleans Superior Court Tuesday, but not before arguing some of the counts. Roger Pion, 34, appeared with his attorney, David Sleigh.
Pion was facing charges of aggravated assault with a weapon on an officer, impeding a public officer, unlawful mischief, committing a crime with a weapon, and leaving the scene of a crash, but one of the charges was dismissed by the judge.
NEWPORT CITY – Who let the dogs out?
That’s the question three downtown merchants and the Newport City Council hope to answer with the assistance of cameras that point down Main Street.
The camera monitors are at the Newport City Police Department.
Debi Mead from the Fabric store expressed her concerns, during Monday night’s council meeting, that people allow their dogs to use Main Street as a bathroom.
Where the dogs are actually coming from is unknown, but the merchants believe some of the owners may live in the apartments above their shops.
NEWPORT CITY – The Newport City Council Monday evening started looking at the 2012-2013 municipal tax rate. However, council members decided to wait before taking any action. The proposed rate is 1.1597, up three cents per $100 of assessed value.

ORLEANS–The Annual Ranger Give & Go Basketball Camp is in full swing at the Don Harter Memorial Gymnasium.
The camp is run by the Lady Rangers head coach Mark Tinker, and has been going steady for nearly a decade.
"I started the camp when I took over the Varsity program here because I felt we needed something for the feeder program and I up and started it."
The camp is open to both boys and girls, and is split into two age groups; Campers in grades 3 through 5 attend in the morning and 6 through 8 in the afternoon.

It has been a busy summer at Dunlavey’s Black Belt Academy, owned and operated by 7th Don Master Rick Dunlavey – highest ranking Master in the Northeast Kingdom. More than 40 of his Tae Kwon Do students participated in the Derby 4th of July Parade. The float, provided and driven by Gosselin Water Wells, held a host of Dragons (mostly aged 3-6) while the Tigers, adult students and family members, marched alongside. The students wowed the crowd with Kibon One throughout the route. Later in July, the school moved to a new location at 292 Shattuck Hill Road in Derby.

Thought you were competing only in a Triathlon? Wrong. We had an open water swim going on and we had some very, very strong swimming going on in Lake Seymour.
We may not have had the wherewithal to recognize you at the Award Ceremony, (our woodal machine broke down and we didn’t have the times available yesterday afternoon). But all of you Aqua and Ollie and Swim Only participants were also in a swim competition (whether you knew it or not), and we are proud to announce the winners of the 3.5 mile Seymour Swim AND the 1.75 mile Seymour Swim.
