ST. JOHNSBURY, VT - The U.S. Attorney's Office in Burlington is charging Thaddeus Gordon and Shawn Greenwood of St. Johnsbury with conspiracy to manufacture meth.
Members of the Vermont HAZMAT (Hazardous Materials) Response Team and the Vermont State Police Clandestine Laboratory Team located and cleaned up the areas involved.
Police searched the woods near a cemetery in St. Johnsbury and found containers, chemicals, residue and other items associated with a meth lab. All unsafe materials were secured, documented and disposed of safely.
IRASBURG - Fire gutted a barn on the Back Coventry Road in Irasburg Friday evening.
Dennis Malshuk said his grandfather, Bill Malshuk, who passed away early this month, owned the barn. The barn contained two tractors, construction equipment, antiques and other family memories. Malshuk said his father restored the barn two years ago. He believes arson is the cause.
The blaze lit up the night sky.
NEWPORT CITY – Things are heating up as November’s general election approaches. On Sept. 14, Democrats held a gathering at the Gateway Center. Last Thursday, it was the Republican's turn at the microphone at the Eastside Restaurant.
Minority Leader Rep. Don Turner of Milton told the crowded room that during the last session most Republicans stood together against tax increases, increased spending, the proposed single payer healthcare plan, and attacks on Vermont utility ratepayers, employers and small businesses.

Theodore “Ted” J. Quintin, 73, of Montgomery Center, VT passed away on September 21, 2012 at his home. He was born September 5, 1939 in Houlton, Maine, the son of Romeo and Hilda (Norway) Quintin.
Ted graduated from Sacred Heart High School, class of 1957 and attended Norwich University. Ted was honorably discharged as a reserve commissioned officer of the army. He was owner and operator of Granny Grunts, Grampa Grunts Lodge, Grannys II Restaurant, and the Thirsty Boot Bar; and was a pillar of the community in Montgomery Center for 40 years.Â

ORLEANS–A questionable call late led to Tyrah Urie scoring the game winning goal with 4:24 left in regulation as Lake Region defeated Enosburg 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Urie was driving down the left side of the field where she made contact with McKenzie Gleason, then fell to the ground.
Much to the surprise to those closest to the play, the referee awarded Urie the PK, and she made no mistake, sending the ball high and into the net.
"Sometimes that happens in soccer, but I am not going to make the call one way or another" said coach Brad Urie about the play.

LYNDON– The North Country boys took second, while the girls finished third in the Falcons, second meet of the season.
Alex Cotnoir, despite spraining an ankle during the race, was the top finisher for the boys in 5th, just 3 seconds back from 4th place runner with Andrew Franklin again on his heels and Sam Brunette just off of their pace.Â
Ross DeLaBruere had another strong race, pacing the top guys over the toughest hill before fading back a bit to 8th place.

NEWPORT–It is easy to cheer for a winner.
During last year's regular season, North Country's football team made winning mundane, so it was easy for fans to show up to the field and root, root, root for the home team.
This year it is just the opposite.
By now, most people know that the Falcons are a younger, smaller, less experienced version of the 2011 team, and they are going to go through some growing pains.
Last week's 53-0 loss coupled with Friday's 51-0 defeat at the hands of Rice leave the Falcons with no points for and 104 points against in the last two games.

NEWPORT–The third time was the charm for the North Country field hockey team on Friday.
After two goals were disallowed for various reasons, Mara Spates' tally with 4:21 left to play in the first was allowed and the Falcons rolled to the 2-0 win over Spaulding.
"They were amazing and the whole team played a great game," coach Chantelle Bouchard exclaimed enthusiastically about her girls' effort.
As play got underway, neither team had the advantage.
