LONG ROAD AHEAD - Part 1

Part 1 of a 2 part story on Derby development.
DERBY - With years of ground work already done, including a 2006 traffic study, a public hearing and a proposal to locate a Walmart Super Center in downtown Newport, the recent announcement that a store will be sited between Shattuck Hill Road and US RT5 in Derby has been met with much anticipation for some. But long before the doors will open, the project must undergo a lengthy public review process that will involve several major players.

LANDFILL WANTS MORE TRASH

COVENTRY – Officials from the state’s largest landfill are asking to increase the facilities tonnage from 2,500 tons to 5,000 tons a day, however the annual total tonnage would be limited to 600,000 tons.
The landfill is currently permitted to handle 370,000 tons.
“We’re not looking to expand the landfill itself,” said John Gay, an engineer with New England Waste Services of Vermont (NEWS). “We’re looking to increase the tonnage that we take at the facility.”

NEK METH RING MEMBERS PLEAD GUILTY

BURLINGTON, VT – Carl Coker, 37, of Island Pond, was sentenced to 100 months imprisonment for conspiracy to manufacture five grams or more of methamphetamine, a Schedule II controlled substance. He was one of 13 Northeast Kingdom residents indicted for methamphetamine-related crimes.
United States District Judge William K. Sessions, III, also ordered that Coker serve four years supervised release after his incarceration ends.

Lady Crusaders Win as UCA Splits With Cabot

CABOT–The UCA Girls picked up their fourth win of the season while the Crusader boys loss their third of the year as the two teams earned a split on Monday evening.
For the girls, it was a well-rounded effort, utilizing their triangle and two defense to shut down the Cabot bigs while getting offense from multiple players in their 39-38 win.
“Our play movement was the best it has been all year and the balance of scoring was nice to see,” said coach Molly Smith.
Laura Libby had ten points while Christina Maxwell and Olivia Foster each had nine.

Lake Region Knocks off Undefeated BFA Fairfax 48-43

ORLEANS–Fans in Ranger Country were treated to arguably the best basketball game that the Lake Region girls have played this season as the Lady Rangers defeated the top-seeded, undefeated BFA Fairfax Bullets 48-43 on Monday night.
"We played great," said coach Mark Tinker. "We got contributions from a lot of players, rotating in a lot of kids, and I thought everybody made significant contributions."
The team has been trending upwards since their game against Enosburg, something the coach expanded on after the game.
