FOUNTAIN JOINS THE FRAY

January 30, 2013

DERBY - The race is on for the Derby Select Board this year. At Town Meeting time in March voters will decide if they want to keep long-time member Laura Dolgin or opt for a new person, Maureen Fountain.
Both Dolgin and Fountain are seeking a two-year seat. Long-time member Karen Jenne is not seeking re-election on the board and instead is vying for the town clerk and treasurer position.
Jenne is leaving a three-year seat open with two candidates, Grant Spates, and Vicky Farrand-Lewis hoping to win that seat on the board.

EARLY FLOODING

January 30, 2013

NEK – Weather continues to be an issue as Vermont’s notorioiusly harsh winters are on the decline. In 2010 we saw one of the warmest winters on record - until 2011. The trend continued in 2012 and, despite warnings that this winter would bite down harder, mild temperatures this week speak to another trend.
A flood watch has been in effect for parts of the Northeast Kingdom, New York and Northern Massachusetts through this morning. Wind, rain and even thunder was expected with temperatures unseasonably warm and in the 40s and 50s.

Falcons Put Forth a Good Effort in 57-45 Loss to BFA

January 30, 2013

NEWPORT–A much better looking North Country girls basketball team took to the court on Tuesday night to square off against the BFA Comets. Although they did not get the win, dropping the contest 57-45, it was a greatly improved showing from last week's match with CVU.
"I am really proud of the fight that the girls showed," said NCU coach Christiane Brown. "It is not like we are two fighters in the ring, but when someone throws that first punch, are you going to lay down or are you going to get up and say is that your best shot, and the girls stood up and I am proud of them."
