Occupational Medicine: New Private Practice

NEWPORT - When North Country Hospital downsized over the summer, occupational medicine was an area that was let go.
Dr. Nelson Haas and his associates, who had worked at the hospital for years, decided that what they offered was essential to the community and went out on their own and opened a private practice. The clinic, called North Star Occupational Medicine, is located in the Wellness Center building on the Crawford Road, and adjacent to the Interstate 91 access road.

North Country Career Center Job Fair Thursday

NEWPORT CITY - Assistant Director Gwen Bailey-Rowe organized an Education and Job Fair at the NC Career Center with a new twist Thursday. The fair has been targeted to students at the career center and high school in years past. This year Bailey-Rowe decided to invite adults to participate as well.
Nineteen businesses and educational institutions were represented at the fair. Bailey-Rowe didn’t want to lose the opportunity for adults in the community who are seeking employment or additional education to take advantage of the fair.

NEKLS Transitions With New Growth

NEWPORT CITY- The recent job fair held at North Country Career Center allowed Northeast Kingdom Learning Services (NEKLS) a chance to connect with the public. NEKLS is well-known for providing tutorial instruction for individuals who take the GED test, as well as students who want to pursue a high school diploma.

Azur Signs On to Head North Country JV Boys

NEWPORT–With Ed Duncan taking over the North Country boys basketball varsity coaching position, an opening was created at the JV level.
Late last week the school filled that position when they hired George Azur II as the new junior varsity boys basketball coach.
"I am really excited to get this opportunity and I can't wait to start the season," Azur said about his hiring.

Breaking News! Fire on Central Street!

NEWPORT-A fire broke out in a residential building on Central St. in downtown Newport early Thursday afternoon. No details of what caused the fire or what the damage is are available as of now, but we will update this story as soon as we have more information.

Accident victim taken to hospital Wednesday

Newport City firefighters extricated a victim from this one-vehicle crash on Route 105 by Little John’s gas station Wednesday. The crash occurred around 4 p.m. Newport Ambulance Service transported at least one person to North Country Hospital. The Vermont State Police and Orleans County Sheriff’s Department also responded to the crash that closed the road for a period of time. No other details were available as of press time. Man With Alleged Stolen Computer Pleads Not Guilty

NEWPORT CITY - A former North Country Hospital employee accused of having a computer that contained patient information entered a not guilty plea Tuesday in the criminal division of Orleans Superior Court to petit larceny of $900 of less and buying, receiving, selling, possessing, concealing stolen property of $900 or less. Judge Howard VanBenthuysen released the man, 30-year-old Christian Cornelius, with conditions.
Cornelius must not discuss the case with hospital employees and stay away from the hospital except for medical reasons.

Local Writer Has Work Published in ‘Chicken Soup’ Series

COVENTRY - Tanya Sousa has been writing since before she was a teenager. She is a successful and talented writer. Most recently, one Sousa’s pieces appeared in “Chicken Soup for the Soul - Miraculous Messages from Heaven.”
“Chicken Soup for the Soul - Miraculous Messages from Heaven” features true stories by the writers who had a real experience with someone who passed away. The book is the newest in the “Chicken Soup” book series. Sousa wrote about an experience that happened over several years when she was looking for a house to renovate with her husband within the past 20 years.
