Falcon Girls Win Season Opener Against Stowe

JAY-The North Country girls hockey team opened up the 2013-2014 season with a 3-1 win over Stowe on Wednesday night.
After a scoreless first period, the Falcons got two goals in the final four minutes of the second, and one in the first minute of the third.
Jenna Moss and Savannah Alberghini-Giroux tallied in the second, while Whitney Bernier scored in the third.
The Falcons peppered Stowe goalie Danielle Mayo with 52 shots, as apposed to allowing just five shots to reach their goalie Mikaella Doran,

Police Chief Pushes For Additional Officer

NEWPORT CITY - Police Chief Seth DiSanto and City Manager John Ward, Jr. would like to have an additional police officer to eliminate the times when only one officer is working.
Ward and DiSanto pitched the idea to the city council Monday when it took a second look at the 2014-2015 proposed budget.
“I’ve finally come to the conclusion in my own mind that it’s not safe to have an officer on duty by himself,” said Ward. “To fix that problem we’ll be going to a 12-hour shift.”

Barton Electric Awarded Grant For Feasibility Study

BARTON - A grant has been awarded to the Barton Electric Department for a feasibility study to see if a hydro plant can be constructed at the outlet of Crystal Lake. Historically, hydro dams were used by several manufacturers starting a couple of hundred years ago when Barton Landing was first settled. In addition the grant will be used to study Barton River flood resilience and water resources planning. The municipalities of Barton and Glover have endorsed the grant application.

Current Use Discussed At Meeting With Secretary Of Agriculture

NEWPORT CITY - “Vermont would not be Vermont today without the Current Use program,” said Sylvia Jensen, agriculture land use planner for the State of Vermont.
Jensen was one of three presenters to speak at a question and answer session with local farmers at the Emory A. Hebard State Office Building Tuesday. It was one of Sectary of Agriculture Chuck Ross’ listening sessions he is conducting in communities across the state.
