From Trampoline to Inside the Ring, Tyler Tinker is Ready to Rumble

Tyler Tinker is like many recent college graduates, he is looking to move on, find gainful employment and begin the next phase of his life.
Tyler wrapped up his collegiate career, for now, as he says he may pursue a masters degree at a later date, and will be heading to Florida to see if he can make his professional dreams come true.
Only he will not be going there just with a degree the exercise sciences, oh no.
He will be going there to make his mark in the world of professional wrestling, for you see it is not just Tyler Tinker that is making the 1,500 mile journey south.

JAY SAGA CONTINUES

JAY PEAK – Jay Peak Resort can now boat that it hosts the world’s first Burton Board Training Center.
Bill Stenger, president of Jay Peak Resort, and Jeff Bolida, vice president of Global Resorts for Burton Snowboards, cut the ribbon at the opening of the all new Jay Peak Burton Board Training Center.
As Stenger stated, “It's not often you can say you are the first of its kind in the world, but we can with this opening.”
Bigger than life carved figures from "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2" welcomed children to the center.

LOCAL LEGISLATORS TAKE AIM AT GUN LAWS

NEWPORT CITY – In the wake of the Newtown, CT, school shooting last month, lawmakers across the country are considering stricter gun regulations. However, Vermont legislators, at least the local ones, say such regulations need to come from the federal government.
“That’s a federal domain, I believe,” said Sen. Robert Starr from North Troy. “They dictate what happens and when it happens.”

NCU BAND PLANS RETURN TRIP TO DISNEY

NEWPORT - Band director Bill Prue and students Zack Tweed and Rebecca Young provided the North Country Union High School Board last Tuesday with a review of last spring's trip to Disney World in Florida. The field trip wasn't only about having fun, said Prue. “The trip addressed standards of music, it's relationship with other mediums, and proper etiquette.”
“Many of the 57 students haven't traveled outside the Northeast Kingdom, much less flown on an airplane,” Prue observed. “That in itself was quite an experience.”

UCA Earns Split at Concord

CONCORD–Chris DeLaBruere had 21 points, and two other Crusaders were in double-digits as UCA defeated Concord (1-6) on Tuesday evening to move to a Division IV best 8-1.
"We didn't shoot as well as we wanted to but Marquel Taylor-Webster had another strong game inside with 13 pts and 18 boards, while Chris added 8 boards to go along with his 21," said coach Tony DeLaBruere. "Defensively we still have much work to do, but some adjustments offensively at half time really seemed to work for us and allowed us to take advantage of our inside game which seems to be clicking right now."

Lamoille Halts Lake Region’s Win Streak at Five

ORLEANS–Ten days in between games is a long stretch for any team, and it showed on Tuesday night as Lake Region fell for the first time this season, losing 38-35 to the Lamoille Lady Lancers.
Casey Machia and Drew Neal each had 10 points to lead their respective teams in scoring.
Next up for 5-1 Lake Region is a visit from Hazen this Friday. Tip-off is at 7:00.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED - WALMART

DERBY – It’s official. The Northeast Kingdom will soon have its first Walmart, as soon as the project can obtain its permits.
Developers along with local and state political leaders announced plans Tuesday to build a Supercenter Walmart on the Derby Road, across from The Tavern.
“This is an example of how we create jobs in the Kingdom,” said Gov. Peter Shumlin. “This region of the state has always suffered from higher unemployment rates than the rest of the state.”

DRIVER SENTENCED IN FLAGGER’S DEATH

January 15, 2013

NEWPORT CITY – John Matten, 78, sat quietly in a wheelchair yesterday as Judge Howard VanBenthuysen handed down a three-year deferred sentence.
Prior to sentencing, Matten entered a guilty plea to gross and negligent operation with fatality resulting. Matten was the driver of a motor vehicle that struck and killed Zachariah Brown, a flagger at a road construction site on VT RT 14 in Newport Center. The accident occurred Aug. 13, 2010.

THE GENERAL’S ELECTION

NEWPORT - Brigadier General Jonathan Fornham, a candidate for the position of Vermont National Guard Adjutant General, met with area legislators while attending the Legislative Breakfast Monday morning.
Former Adjutant General Michael Dubie resigned from the position last summer and the post has been filled by his deputy until the legislature chooses a new leader.

Elizabeth Threlfall Hammond, age 94, slipped peacefully in the arms of her beloved Lord Jesus on Wednesday, January 9, 2013. 
She leaves behind the love of her life, Robert James Hammond. They celebrated 71 years of marriage on September 7, 2012. Together they traveled the world and raised their family in many countries.
