NEWPORT CITY – Pending development in the Northeast Kingdom is on the minds of many local legislators. 
“We’re in the midst of a renaissance,” said Rep. Duncan Kilmartin of Newport City during Monday's legislative breakfast, held at the East Side Restaurant. 

HOSPITAL HAS FLU SHOTS

NEWPORT – High flu activity continues nationwide according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC). In Vermont, flu activity remains widespread with reports of high absenteeism among school age children in the Northeast Kingdom.
According to reports, three adults have died in Vermont from the flu this season so far and 14 adults have reportedly died in New Hampshire.
The last few years have seen mild flu seasons, but this year is different. The flu came on early and strong.
The good news is that, despite a critical nationwide shortage, North Country Hospital still has the flu vaccine.

NORTH TROY- Gustav Verderber is a nationally known naturalist, author, photographer and an adjunct professor of environmental science at Johnson State College who lives with his wife Cheryl and two English Setters in North Troy.
Verderber's family emigrated to the USA when he was five years old, moving to Ohio where his father obtained employment with the Ford Motor Company. His exposure to nature started when his family would visit his uncle who owned 400 acres in the Allegheny Mountains south of Buffalo, NY.

QNEK’S NUNS GIVE FROM THE HEART

NEWPORT- Two and a half months ago, Hurricane Sandy decimated the eastern seaboard, especially New Jersey and New York.
The recovery effort continues. According to the Red Cross, thousands remain in need of shelter and food.
Luckily the storm skirted Vermont and the state recovered quickly, leaving Vermonters in a position to provide help to others in need.
Hurricane Sandy hit home for QNEK's Lynn Leimer. She is from New Jersey.
QNEK is well known for stepping up and helping when tragedy strikes, and the theater company held a fundraiser when Tropical Storm Irene hit Vermont.

Falcons Find a Way to Win Despite Fourteen Penalties

JAY-Kody Halikas had two first period goals and four different players had a goal apiece as the North Country Falcons defeated the Missisquoi Thunderbirds on Saturday night.
It was another penalty filled contest, the second in a row in Jay for the Falcons, as the home team racked up fourteen calls, including one five and three ten minute misconducts. MVU had nine penalties, with two being ten minute misconducts.
"We had some bright spots and we had some dark spots," coach Andrew Roy said when asked of his overall impression of the game.

Taylor-Webster’s 24 Points Leads UCA Past Cabot 60-47

NEWPORT–For a game that ended at 60-47, UCA's win over Cabot in boy's basketball felt a lot closer than it actually was.
Much of the game was played with UCA leading by about twenty points, but Coach Tony DeLaBruere hard a hard time believing the point differential.
"Every time I looked at the score I couldn't believe it and we were fortunate to be where we were at the end because it should have been much closer game," he said after the game.
Things got off to a slow pace, with both teams trying to find a rhythm they were comfortable with.

Big First Quarter Paves Way for Lady Crusaders Third Win

NEWPORT–The UCA girls picked up their third win of the season, and their second over Cabot, as they won a close one 40-37.
It didn't start out too close as UCA came out on fire, scoring sixteen points in the first.
"We talked about coming out strong and it was nice to see them come out strong and be confident," said coach Molly Smith.
Hannah Piette was dealing, knocking home two from downtown and one from a bit closer.
Amy DeLaBruere continues to improve her game and she had four points, as did Laura Libby.

Weekend Round-up: Falcon Girl’s Hockey, Lake Region Boys Pick up Wins

North Country 2, U-32 0
MONTPELIER-Mikaella Doran stopped thirteen shots and the Falcons scored a pair of goals to defeat U-32 2-0 on Saturday evening.
"It was our usual M.O., we couldn't score, but we had a much better first period," said coach Claude Paul.
The Falcons did manage to get one in the first, as they out-shot the Raiders 10-5 in the period.
Emily Doty notched her second of the season, converting on a Corrina Cota pass to make it 1-0.
