NEWPORT – The St. Albans woman charged in the fatal car crash that killed a local couple was once the subject of a Burlington Free Press article about her struggle with addiction. Alexis Gabree pleaded innocent Tuesday to two counts of gross negligent operation of a motor vehicle, death resulting.
The head-on crash, which occurred August 5, 2012 on VT 105 in North Troy, killed retired husband and wife Edmund and Margaret Moran. Gabree is currently in custody on $50,000 bail.
COVENTRY – Pedro Grondin, during last year’s annual Town Meeting, lit the flame that sparked the interest for Coventry to start its own fire department. This year, residents will vote if they want to continue with the process or extinguish the idea.
Voters will also be asked if they want to authorize the select board to spend no more than $515,000 for the purpose of building, equipping and establishing the first year's budget. If approved, the department would be part of the town’s operating budget. Since the town doesn’t have a municipal budget, property taxes won’t be affected.
NEWPORT - Bill Stenger has an agreement with Doug Spates to take over and demolish the rundown block on the south side of Main Street in Newport. But what that means for all the building tenants and business owners is not yet certain.
The Family Recipe Restaurant, owned by Carol Bonneau, has a long history of serving Newport City residents and is on the block slated for demolition. Bonneau does not know what the future will bring and is a bit concerned. Bonneau wants everyone to know she is still open for business.
