NEWPORT - Green Mountain Power (GMP) has reached a settlement agreement with local journalist Chris Braithwaite.
GMP will pay Braithwaite $22,500 to cover his legal expenses for the defense of the criminal case he faced as a result of an alleged trespass onto GMP property. That case was dismissed.
Braithwaite's civil suit against GMP will be dismissed with prejudice. GMP says this is the quickest resolution to the case and is not admitting any wrongdoing.

BURLINGTON – One of 13 defendants charged in federal court with contributing to the operation of a meth lab in Island Pond has been sentenced.
Kevin Dodge, 45, was ordered to serve to 33 months in a federal prison for conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine, a Schedule II controlled substance.
United States District Judge William K. Sessions III, also ordered that Dodge serve three years supervised release after his incarceration ends. In addition, Dodge agreed to forfeit $5,000 in lieu of forfeiture of a vehicle used in the conspiracy.
COVENTRY - Coventry voters will be asked at Town Meeting if they want to have their own fire department. If they say yes, the town will be asked to approve a budget of $515,000. If they do, the department already has a crew. Local residents are ready and willing to man the pumps for Coventry.
The money includes constructing a building and equipping the department.
IRASBURG – The Irasburg Fire Chief says it is time for a new fire truck. The current 1984 pumper truck needs approximately $84,000 in repairs to bring it up to the required standards. The new truck is estimated to cost up to $225,000.
Four dealers are in a bidding war over the truck, Fire Chief Robin Beaton said Tuesday. The town has not had good luck with purchasing used trucks in the past, Beaton said. A used truck would cost about $180,000 and could be without a warranty or near the end of it, and Beaton is worried about spending on repairs, as the town has in the past.

NEWPORT–It has been a little while since the UCA boys have hosted a home play-off game, and after a season that left the team with a 14-6 record, the third ranked Crusaders are more than ready to welcome South Royalton to the North Country gymnasium on Wednesday evening.
"We are obviously excited at the chance to start the play-offs with a home game," said UCA coach Tony DeLaBruere. "Everybody is calm right now, and we need to keep doing what we have been doing and when we relax on the court we definitely have better success."

NEWPORT CITY - Physician assisted suicide, known as the Death with Dignity Bill, continues to be a hot button issue in Vermont.
Rep. Duncan Kilmartin of Newport City said during Monday's Legislative Breakfast that some lawmakers are calling the bill physician prescribed suicide, because physicians are ones who will give the "lethal cocktail."
