NEWPORT – The St. Albans woman charged in the fatal car crash that killed a local couple was once the subject of a Burlington Free Press article about her struggle with addiction. Alexis Gabree pleaded innocent Tuesday to two counts of gross negligent operation of a motor vehicle, death resulting.
The head-on crash, which occurred August 5, 2012 on VT 105 in North Troy, killed retired husband and wife Edmund and Margaret Moran. Gabree is currently in custody on $50,000 bail.
COVENTRY – Pedro Grondin, during last year’s annual Town Meeting, lit the flame that sparked the interest for Coventry to start its own fire department. This year, residents will vote if they want to continue with the process or extinguish the idea.
Voters will also be asked if they want to authorize the select board to spend no more than $515,000 for the purpose of building, equipping and establishing the first year's budget. If approved, the department would be part of the town’s operating budget. Since the town doesn’t have a municipal budget, property taxes won’t be affected.
NEWPORT - Bill Stenger has an agreement with Doug Spates to take over and demolish the rundown block on the south side of Main Street in Newport. But what that means for all the building tenants and business owners is not yet certain.
The Family Recipe Restaurant, owned by Carol Bonneau, has a long history of serving Newport City residents and is on the block slated for demolition. Bonneau does not know what the future will bring and is a bit concerned. Bonneau wants everyone to know she is still open for business.

NEWPORT – Turing Points is experiencing a surge in student population and is outgrowing its current location.
The program's directors now have their eyes on the former Mogan Elementary School, E. Taylor Hatton, as a possible future location.
Morgan decided last year to close the school and send students to Derby. What to do with the building remains a question. Â The possibility of locating Turning Points to the Morgan facility will be discussed at Town Meeting in March.
NEWPORT CITY – Over the past few years, Mayor Paul Monette has been in the forefront of developing his beloved Newport and the surrounding area.
Monette, who has been mayor since 2009, is seeking to retain his seat on Town Meeting Day next month. He is running unopposed.
Before becoming mayor, Monette was a member of the Newport City Council. Monette said he is running for mayor again because "The job is not done.... More needs to be done as far as development in the city. I want to see all of the positive changes actually happen.”
NEWPORT- A new security system is now in place at the entrance to North Country Career Center (NCCC) where students, school personnel, and visitors must pass to access the center and high school.
The system was first used by the high school for students who arrive late or leave early from class.
Interim NCCC Director Eileen Illuzzi said the system is used to make sure that no one with a criminal background that precludes them from being on campus, or someone with a restraining order in effect, will be allowed entry.
NEWPORT - A public meeting will be held Feb. 20, starting at 6 p.m. at the North Country Career Center in its first step toward planning for the future vocational needs of young and adult students.
“I don't want to lead this process,” states Illuzzi. “The community's input will be the basis for developing a plan for everyone to use the facility. It is important to articulate goals, to develop new learning skills, learn what future courses may be offered, what businesses are looking for.”
