CALLING ALL STUDENTS

August 21, 2013

NEWPORT CITY – The North Country Career Center is offering a new national certification class to help students become emergency dispatchers. The career center purchased seven 911 dispatch stations. The stations are a simulation to what dispatchers use in their line of work. The course will be equivalent to a 40-hour dispatching course, which is the same as what today's dispatchers take.

RON CHAFFE’S LAST HURRAH!

NEWPORT CITY– Forty years after starting his career painting the walls and ceilings of North Country Union High School, Ron Chaffee was honored by the high school board and administrators. Two former principals, Maggie Griffith (current board member) and Noel Ford (teacher, principal and superintendent), gave glowing assessments of Chaffee's invaluable service to the school.

GETTING READY TO WORK

ORLEANS – This summer, Lake Region Union High School student Bethany Lucas got the chance to take part in the Vermont Department of Labor’s Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Summer Youth Program. Bethany works as an Activities Coordinator Assistant at Bel-Aire Center Nursing Home in Newport. Her job consists of helping out with various activities such as bingo and exercise with the residents. Bethany said her favorite part of the job is talking to residents about their childhoods, and what life was like compared to today.

Krister Barclay; From Craftsbury, to Korea, and Beyond

CRAFTSBURY-When Krister Barclay was four years-old his mother Kim introduced him to the sport of Tae Kwon Do by having him sign up for classes at Dunlavey's Black Belt Academy.
Nine years later, he has traveled around the country and across the globe in pursuit of Tae Kwon Do excellence.
Last week I went out to meet Krister and Kim and discuss his career, his travels and everything in between.
Kim, who is from Korea, spoke about how she got her son involved in the sport.

MAKE-A-WISH TEEN PAYS IT BACK

August 20, 2013

WEST CHARLESTON – Nov. 6, 2008, doctors gave Mariah Bowman a three percent chance of survival.
Mariah has Dermatomysitis. The Mayo Clinic defines the disease as an uncommon inflammatory disease marked by muscle weakness and a distinctive skin rash.
Mariah is throwing a dance for her family, friends, supporters, doctors and others at the Derby Elks Club Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. The party is free, but the Bowman family is holding a raffle with prizes valued at more than $3,000. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit Make-a-Wish Vermont.

THANKSGIVING IN AUGUST FUNDRAISER

NEWPORT CITY – Have a hankering for a traditional Thanksgiving meal? Good news, you don't need to wait until November and you don't need to prepare it yourself. Just make your way Brenda's Homestyle Cookin' Restaurant at 125 Main Street Thursday evening. Proceeds from the dinner will benefit the Newport City Fire Department.

FIERY FATAL CRASH

August 19, 2013

COVENTRY – A fiery two-vehicle crash on US RT 5 in Coventry took the life of an Albany, VT, man Monday morning. Timothy J. Harrington, 57, was pronounced dead on the scene after his 1999 Saab 9.3 struck a 2010 Western Star Tractor Trailer being driven by Kevin Barrup, 48, of Derby. Barrup sustained what police have described as minor injuries and was taken to North Country Hospital for treatment.

IT'S ALL COMING BACK TO ME

NEWPORT CITY – Upward of 100 people attended a Sunday potluck luncheon and book signing for Jack Lazor, who has authored "The Organic Grain Grower." Along with his wife, Ann, Jack has spent decades at Butterworks Farm in Westfield producing organic products such as yogurt.

FAIR ENDS WITH A BANG

BARTON - The Orleans County Fair concluded with a bang Sunday evening during the annual demolition derby, making it the ultimate car wreck. This year's first place went to two new winners. Brandon Butler, 16, of Irasburg, won the four-cylinder class and Reg Norris of Brownington won the six to eight-cylinder class.

Bolduc, Gebbie Take Exciting Arthur Mandros Memorial

ORLEANS-The long time golfing duo of David Bolduc and St. Johnsbury resident John Gebbie prevailed Sunday afternoon at the 2013 Arthur Mandros Member–Guest memorial held at the beautiful Orleans Country Club.
For the pair, it marked the third time since 1990 they had outlasted the field.
