DERBY â€“ Local children's author Ray Perkins and Rick Dunlavey, owner of Dunlaveyâ€™s Black Belt Academy, are sponsoring a Family Fun Day to benefit cancer research. This event will feature Tae Kwan Do demonstrations, a bouncy house and slide, face painting by Donna Bousquet, a book signing, Wellness Center demonstrations (including board breaking), Jedâ€™s Cotton Candy, burgers and hot dogs, and some cool giveaways. Buy a book and get a complimentary two-week pass for the whole family to participate in Master Dâ€™s Black Belt Academy.
DERBY CENTER â€“ Every fall students return to school and get acclimated to a schedule of classes, lunch, study hall and physical activity. One routine that goes back generations is the fire drill. Students, faculty and administrators at North Country Union Junior High School participated in a fire drill Wednesday and quickly showed they were up to task.

NEWPORTâ€“It wasn't the prettiest win in the history of North Country boys soccer, but it was definitely an important one, as the Falcons defeated Lyndon 2-1 to start the season 1-0 in 2013.
"It was important to start off on a good foot," said North Country coach James McKenny. "Obviously every year you want to start with a "W." It could have been a prettier brand of soccer, obviously it was a little rough out there."

ENOSBURG FALLS-Utilizing late-game heroics from seniors Alex Beauregard and Josh Thibault, Lake Region opened up the 2013 campaign with a 2-1 overtime victory over Enosburg in high school boys soccer Wednesday.
Beauregard tallied in the fourth minute of overtime, that goal coming just six minutes after Thibault bested the opposing goal keeper in the 78th minute of regulation to force extra play.
MONTPELIERâ€“North Countryâ€™s field hockey team got goals from Morgan Greene and Brittney Royer as they came away with a 2-2 tie in their season opener.
