Canaan man dies in accident early Sunday morning

December 1, 2013

Canaan — A 51-year-old Canaan man was pronounced dead at the scene of a one-vehicle crash at 12:45 a.m. Sunday on Route 102.
Sgt. Larry Smith of the Vermont State Police wrote in his police report that Randall Riley lost control of his 2007 Dodge pickup on icy roads. Heading south out of town, he went off the west side of the road and hit a culvert before flipping over. The truck rolled onto its side and back onto its wheels.

Veteran Wanted For Hire: Newport Furniture Parts Testifies At U.S. Senate

NEWPORT CITY - Newport Furniture Parts has increased emphasis on showing the company’s appreciation of veterans and has ramped up a campaign to encourage veterans to apply for work. Human Resources Manager Kevin Deslauriers recently attended a roundtable discussion in Washington D.C. with the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee.
Newport Furniture Parts was the only Vermont firm represented at the committee hearing and it was also the smallest firm.

Child Injured At Jay Peak Sues

JAY – A five-year-old girl was severely injured at Jay Peak last season and now her father is suing. The child was in a group ski lesson at the resort in April on a trail called the Interstate. A snowboarder, William Vincent, came down the hill at about 50 mph and slammed into the girl, a witness said according to court records.
“While maintaining this speed, defendant Vincent snowboarded straight into the ski school class and collided violently with plaintiff, ” the lawsuit states.

Make-a-Wish Recipient Pays It Back

SOUTH BURLINGTON - A Canaan teenager who traveled to Hawaii with his family six years ago, courtesy of Make-a-Wish Vermont, showed his appreciation to the organization that covered the cost of the trip.
Luke Belleville, 16, went to the Healthy Living Market and Café in South Burlington to sell Christmas trees with his father Friday. Proceeds from the sale of the trees, which came from the family’s tree farm, will benefit Make-a-Wish Vermont so other children can have wishes fulfilled.

Giving Thanks To Those Who Thanked

BARTON - A group of area veterans visited St. Paul’s School in Barton last week to show appreciation to a group of students who sent them cards in the days leading up to Veterans’ Day.
Jennifer Wilson’s class sent 100 cards to about 50 local veterans. In response, Wilson’s father John Wilson, who spent much of his life in the military including a tour in Vietnam, and a handful of other veterans went to the school to personally thank the students for their thoughtfulness, answer their questions, give them American flags, and give them gift certificates to McDonald’s.

Turkey Trot Draws More Than 300

BARTON – More than 300 participants braved frigid temperatures Thursday morning to take part in the annual Turkey Trot, a 5K run/walk to benefit the 98-Mile Foundation.
In all 136 walkers and 197 runners took part. This year was the first time ever it had more runners than walkers.
Robin and Gail Robitaille started the event 12 years ago to benefit Melissa “Missy” White who suffered from cystic fibrosis. White’s mother, Kathy White, explained Thursday morning that back then her daughter needed a double lung transplant.

Volunteers Give Thanks By Cooking For Others

DERBY - Dozens of volunteers gave up time away from their families Thursday to make sure others had a free traditional Thanksgiving dinner.
The Derby Elks Club, Area Agency on Aging for Northeastern Vermont, and The Unitarian Universalist Church sponsored the free dinner at the Elks Lodge.
The Derby Elks Club started the dinner 10 years ago. Several years ago it joined efforts of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Derby Line that also had a dinner. Yesterday’s dinner served around 400 people both at the Elks Lodge and at their homes.
