Raptors Squeak Past Lake Region 2-1

ORLEANS-In a very evenly played match, the Rivendell Raptors had a little more at the end than the home standing Lake Region Rangers as they held on for a 2-1 victory. The Raptors erased a 1-0 LRU lead by scoring twice in the last 13 minutes of regulation to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
With a large, several-hundred strong boisterous crowd on hand to witness the quarter-final between the number 4 seed, Lake Region and the number five seed Raptors it was obvious on this chilly 42 degree day that it would be tight one.

Muddy Waters Pottery

NEWPORT CITY- The art of making pottery takes years of practice as Diana Poulin is well aware. Poulin started working with pottery as a hobby and spent five years at the Vermont Clay Studio, and then on to other pottery schools to hone her craft.
“I took lessons for ten years before I started to teach it,” recalls Poulin. “I always had a desire to do it. You see someone make a pot and it's something you want to do for yourself.

WCAX-TV Anchor Speaks at Rotary

Falcons Score Twice in Second Half, Advance to Semi-Finals

NEWPORT-North Country's field hockey team scored two goals in the second half to advance past Fair Haven in the Division III Quarter-finals by the score of 2-1.
The Falcons got down 1-0 in the first half on a goal by the Slaters' Anna-Michelle Fabian.
As the rains intensified in the second half, so did North Country's play.
Brittany Fortier tied the contest after some good Falcon pressure in the Slater end.
She then set up Briana Bocelli for what would be the eventual game winner.
The girls will now face Stowe on Wednesday at UVM.
Game time is 3:45.

A Hot Water Problem

DERBY- North Country Union Junior High School (NCUJHS) board member Richard Cartee shared bad news at the October meeting. As a member of the building Committee, Cartee said the engineer and new foreman have discovered more problems with the school's physical plant. Inadequate heating in some classrooms and bathrooms, aging equipment in the kitchen, fire doors that may be a safety hazard have already been identified as needing fixing. Recently they learned that there are problems with the hot water in several classrooms as well as the locker room.

Sleeping At Wheel Leads To Fatality

MORGAN- On October 23rd the State Police responded to a head on crash near the intersection of Jordan Road and Route 111. Operator Joseph Logan, 18, of North Troy, was westbound on Rt. 111 in Morgan driving at 50 mph when he fell asleep at the wheel as he entered the corner. Logan was awaken by passengers Robert Turcott, 20, and Jeremy Maxwell, 29, who were yelling at him.

Wright Scores a Pair to Send Craftsbury Into the 2nd Round

CRAFTSBURY–Iva Wright had two second half goals to lead the Craftsbury Lady Chargers as they defeated the Danville Indians 4-2 in the opening round of the Division IV play-offs.
"We did really well today and played as a team," said Craftsbury coach Ashley Maxfield.
"Plus it helps when we can play with more than one sub," she added with a chuckle.
When play got underway on Wednesday afternoon, Craftsbury was ready to go.
Melanie Sergiev was leading the attack, heading down the left side of the field trying to through balls into the center of the pitch.

Shocker!! Rangers Fall in 1st Round 2-0

ORLEANS-For a novice fan who didn’t know a number fifteen seed from a number two seed, it was indeed hard to tell who was who yesterday afternoon.
The black clad team from Addison county or the white clad team from Orleans County.
Middlebury High school, having been shut out for ten consecutive games, found the scoring touch mid-way through the first half and added a second tally in the second en-route to the biggest upset of the first round of the Vermont state playoffs, defeating the Lady Rangers 2-0.

LRUHS Projected Budget Up 2.99%

BARTON- A first walk through the 2014/15 budget projects a 2.99% increase, a number that satisfies Finance Committee Chair Mike Sanville. “The overall driver is salaries and benefits,” Sanville reported to the board. “The numbers are pretty solid, it's mostly minor (line item) adjustments.”
The estimated budget that will be presented to voters is $6,669,089, though Sanville did advise the board that there is some uncertainty over health care costs. “We budgeted for it, but it could blow us out of the water,” cautioned Sanville.

American Pickers Visit Fred Webster

COVENTRY - Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz, from the History Channel's American Pickers, spent yesterday picking through Fred Webster's large collection of farm memorabilia, some of which dates back to the turn of the 20th century. 
Wolfe, the show's creator and executive producer, has traveled around the country buying and selling goods for 25 years. Thirteen years ago, Wolfe discovered the east coast "is where everything is at."
