We all knew it was coming. The TV and radio had warned folks to "batten down the hatches," and yet the downpour seemed to catch many by surprise as they hurried into shelter. High winds, pounding rain, thunder and lightning, and even a report of a small tornado kept us inside and huddled around lanterns and candles. Green Mountain Power reported at least 27,000 people without power last night, and 8,000 still without power Thursday morning.

Bucklandâ€“â€“ Forest, 87, born in 1926 to Arthur and Emma Buckland, passed away September 6, 2013 surrounded by family members.

ORLEANS-After numerous chances to put the ball in the back of the net in regulation, Alex Beauregard finally got one past Lamoille netminder Bennett Anderson 44 seconds into overtime to give the Lake Region boys soccer team the 1-0 win over the Lamoille Lancers on Tuesday afternoon.
"That was the best feeling in the world, scoring the golden goal in overtime. Too bad it could not have happened earlier, but oh well," Beauregard replied when asked about his game-winner.

After years of being on the losing end of games against the Missisquoi Valley Union Thunderbirds, the North Country Falcon field hockey team defeated the T-birds 4-1 on Monday afternoon to improve their record to 1-0-1.
"This win feels amazing," said NCU coach Chantelle Bouchard. "We have come so close in the past, and after losing to them in the play-offs the last two years, this win means a lot to both me, and all of the girls on the team."
It was a much different MVU team that the Falcons faced on Monday, as the T-Birds lost 12 seniors from last year due to graduation.

DERBY LINE - Derby Line officials get together regularly for private meetings with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to discuss issues in the community, however those meetings are not open for the public per CBP request. One trustee at a time meets in order to avoid a quorum. Derby Line Trustee Chairman Keith Beadle met with CBP last Wednesday. The discussion centered around the port of entry on Interstate 91 in Derby Line.

DERBY - Seven motorcycles left the Hellbilly Hideaway Sunday afternoon for a very important mission - to raise money for the Katie Grace Kelley Ride.
Michelle Kelley and her son Michael Kelley started the ride six years ago to benefit the family of Michelle's niece, Katie Grace Kelley. At the time, Katie had leukemia and required frequent trips out of town for medical treatments. Katie is better, but the ride continues to roll on.
