PAYING IT BACK

August 26, 2013

JOHNSON – For the first time in Vermont Electric Co-operative’s (VEC) history, it will return money to its members. VEC has about 33,000 members who will see a one-time deduction on their bill, which will be generated in mid-September. The amount will be based on how much each individual household or entity spent on power costs in 1997 and 2012.

BIG CHANGES FOR STATE HEATING ASSISTANCE

MONTPELIER – Vermonters who receive government heating fuel assistance will most likely see changes in their benefits this winter.
The Department of Children and Families will hold a public hearing sometime within the next four to six weeks on the changes. The Vermont Legislative Council will hold a public hearing later on.

BROOKS IMPRISONED FOR EMBEZZLEMENT

BURLINGTON, VT – The Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont announced that Kimberley Brooks, 48, of Brownington, was sentenced Monday in United States District Court in Burlington to 18 months of imprisonment following her guilty plea to charges that she embezzled more than $157,000 from her employer. U.S. District Judge William K. Sessions III also ordered that Brooks serve a three-year term of supervised release after she gets out of prison, and that she pay restitution of about $163,000.

North Country Soccer Boys Fielding a Young Team in 2013

NEWPORT–Last season was a tough road to travel for the North Country soccer team, as they went 3-9-1 for the year.
This season they are looking to change that, but it will not be easy.
Overall, the number of kids playing soccer is down, and at one point it looked like there may not have even been a JV team, but thankfully the numbers were high enough to have both squads.
Head coach James McKenny will field a smaller team than last season, but he is ready to once again tackle the challenges of the ever competitive Metro Division.

JAY PEAK KEEPS GROWING

August 25, 2013

JAY, VT – The rapid fire construction and development continues at Jay Peak Resort.
The new 85 room hotel on stateside has risen and will be open for guests by Christmas this year. The ticket price on the hotel – with a new base lodge, restaurant, retail space, and rental center – is $23 million paid for with EB-5 foreign investment money. The new project is on top of about $200 million in other new development at the resort, including the indoor water park, ice arena, and other hotels, a conference center, and lodging options.

THUNDER IN THE NEK

ORLEANS - The roar of motorcycles filled the air Saturday as about 30 bikers rode through as part of Kingdom Thunder. United Motorcyclists of Vermont sponsored the event. Kingdom Thunder started four years ago to benefit Indoor Recreation of Orleans County. Now that the facility no longer exists, proceeds benefit the Orleans-Essex Visiting Nurses Association (OEVNA).
