BROWNINGTON'S TIME MACHINE

BROWNINGTON - It was the ultimate history lesson Sunday during Old Stone House Day.
Old Stone House Day happens once a year. The day gives everyone the opportunity to tour the multi-story building and barns for free. The property houses equipment used by early Americans. Volunteers also demonstrated how Americans lived, traveled, worked, and played in the 1800s.

Dale Reginald Lamere, 70, well known businessman of Island Pond, VT passed away suddenly on August 7, 2013 in Island Pond, VT. He was born June 4, 1943 in Stewartstown, NH, the son of  Reginald and Elizabeth Boutin Lamere.

SOAP BOX HERO

August 8, 2013

NEWPORT – Dr. Normand Turcotte of Newport won the Outstanding Director Award for the All American Soap Box Derby. Only about eight awards are given out throughout the world. Turcotte received the award while he was attending the Soap Box Derby International Championship Race in Akron, OH, in July. The award was a big surprise to Turcotte.

WINGS TAKES FLIGHT

August 8, 2013

COVENTRY – The final walk through is near as the new Wings restaurant and bar opens today in Coventry at the Newport Airport. Cavan Meese, one of the business’s driving forces and co-owners, has not slept much the last few days as the operation gets ready for its kickoff. Meese said, "It’s still a lot of running around and getting final things done.”

Vt. border crossing has system outages

August 8, 2013

ST. ALBANS, Vt. (AP) — U.S. Customs officials say the Highgate Springs port of entry in Vermont is experiencing system outages and delays crossing the border are expected.
Passenger and commercial vehicles are being told to seek other border crossing in Vermont or use the Champlain, N.Y., crossing.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection says it's working with local, state and federal agencies to fix the system.

Junior Golf Alive and Thriving at The Orleans Country Club

ORLEANS-Despite a threatening sky, OCC’s Jr. Golf Outing proceeded with a lot of golf and only a slight sprinkling of rain!
For six Saturdays, clinics were held for our area youth. Over 100 kids attended the clinics, with an average of 35-40 coming out each week. The season culminated with a Junior Golf Outing on Saturday, August 2nd, with approximately 30 youth attending.

FIRE AT FASTENAL

August 7, 2013

A storage area for the Fastenal store located at Newport Industrial Park on Derby Road was the scene of an electrical fire Wednesday evening. The Newport City Fire Department quickly responded.

ROYAL LIPIZZANS IN BARTON

August 7, 2013

BARTON – For Rebecca McCullough, traveling the United States with a dozen thoroughbred horses is a way of life. And after a seven year absence from the Green Mountain State, her company, Herrmann's Lipizzan Stallions troupe makes a stop at the Orleans County fairgrounds in Barton for several shows beginning this Friday night. The beautiful white long maned animals, all males, are fine tuned and well trained as they prepare for some 125 shows a year.
