JUST ONE MORE MILE....

DERBY – Well trained athletes from several states and provinces converged in Derby for the annual Kingdom Triathlon. The weather was good, partly cloudy, and around 70 degrees for the endurance testing races.
Participants swam in Seymour Lake, bicycled through Derby, Charleston, and Morgan, and ran along the country roads. The finish line was at the Derby Beach House.

GETTING BETTER WITH AGE

NEWPORT CITY - Thirty years ago Sunday, a handful of antique car enthusiasts met at Mulkin Automotive for an antique and classic car show. The show has grown since and now Cars of Yesteryear (COY) holds the event at North Country Union High School. This year's show featured about 145 cars from across New England and parts of Quebec. The Newport City Fire Department recently held a dinner to benefit 13-year-old Bretton Hawksworth who has inoperable cancerous brain tumors. Illuzzi–– Vincent, Sr., 93, who lived on the Barre-Montpelier Road in Berlin for 54 years, died on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at the Berlin Health & Rehabilitation Center, where he had been staying for the past several weeks.

MEMPHRE'S BACK!

August 1, 2013

NEWPORT CITY – At long last, residents and visitors to the area will be able to view and photograph Memphre, or at least a replica thereof. Vermont's First Lady of Draconology, Barbara Malloy, who is moving from the area, has donated a cement statue of Memphre to the Community Garden located next to the band stand at Gardener Park.

TRUSTEES NIX MINI/MARTS, DRIVE THRUS IN DERBY LINE

DERBY – Derby Line trustees want to prevent developers from building gas station/mini marts in the Village of Derby Line’s commercial district. They also do not want any business with a drive through window.
The trustees asked the Derby Planning Commission for a zoning change to eliminate Auto Service Station/Mini Mart as a conditional use in the village commercial district.

Lightning Grab 11-8 Win Over Vermont Outlaws

August 1, 2013

NEWPORT–In what may be their final game of their season, the OEC Lightning shook off a couple of tough outings and defeated the Vermont Outlaws 11-8.
The Lightning got off to a good start, scoring early and often to grab a 7-0 lead heading into the fourth inning.
After three scoreless innings from Bryce Carter, Seth Prue entered the game.
The Outlaws would strike for seven runs, not all of them earned, and the contest was tied heading into the fifth.

UP IN FLAMES

COVENTRY – Route 14 was closed for a period of time Wednesday after a fully loaded dump truck caught fire.
