Island Pond’s Cardboard Boat Race: A Traditional Part of July 4th Events

Island Pond, VT–– Sunday, July 7th, a half dozen brave teams competed against each other in a paddling race on the waterfront in Island Pond as part of the Independence Day weekend celebration. Instead of kayaks or canoes, however, their boats were made of cardboard!

Louis Garneau Ready To Build

DERBY– Louis Garneau is planning to build a new $8-million facility on the Derby Road within the next few weeks. Company officials made the announcement at a press conference Monday morning that included Louis Garneau, his family, the general manager, Governor Peter Shumlin, a couple of local dignitaries, and others.

No Rest For Aquafest Bed Racers

The Newport Parks and Recreation team go head-to-head against The Newport Ambulance Service during the bed races in Gardner Park Thursday. Newport Parks and Recreation walked away as the over all winners.

Hartford Bests Lake Region to Win 12-U Ripken Championship

BARTON–Hunter Perkins struck out 16 batters, including setting down the side in order by way of the K three times, as Hartford defeated Lake Region 9-2 to win the Vermont State 12-U Cal Ripken championship on Sunday afternoon.
Lake Region coach Shawn Perron was extremely proud of his team's efforts in the loss.
"I thought it was a well rounded effort," said the coach. "I thought our bats did what I expected them to do, and our defense was awesome. Defense is what kept us in this entire game."

OEC Lightning Faces Stiff Competition at War at the Shore

NEW LONDON, CT-What started out on high noted ended with two straight defeats, as the OEC Lightning Junior Legion went 1-2 at the War at the Shore baseball tournament this past weekend.
Things got off to a good start as the Lightning opened up play with a 3-2 win. Colin Myrick and Shane Goodell alternated on the bump for the blue and white, and limited the CT Gamers to just two runs.
With the bases loaded and score knotted at 2-2, Ryan O'Donell's walk-off hit was the difference as the Lightning won the contest 3-2.

USA: HAPPY BIRTHDAY

DERBY–– People lined up on both sides of the street from the Elks Club in Derby all the way down Main Street for its annual July 4th parade. Onlookers were not disappointed as the parade was about an hour an half long and the sun kept on shining.

WESTFIELD - Police say the man killed on Fuller Road earlier this week is 61-year-old George Kouzoujian.

12-U Cal Ripken States Set For This Weekend in Barton

BARTON–The baseball diamond in downtown Barton will be the site of the 2013 12-U Vermont State Cal Ripken Championship, starting on Friday July 5th.
Lake Region is the host team and North Country, despite losing in their district final, will also be at the tournament.
The other two teams will come from the Randolph area and Hartford.
Going into play on Friday, Lake Region has to be considered one of the favorites, as they reeled off three wins in a row to win the district tournament up here last weekend.

Lake Region 1 Wins Orleans Country Babe Ruth Title

July 4, 2013

ORLEANS-The Orleans County Babe Ruth season came to a close on Saturday June 29, 2013 with LR 2 defeating LR 1 13 to 2.
LR 2 ended the season with an 8 game win streak to claim the title.
LR 1 outlasted a determined North Country squad, in a classic double elimination tournament that saw North Country win the first game, but LR 1 battled back to play in the championship game.
All local athletes did a tremendous job in the short season.
The regular season included games with the Lyndon Babe Ruth league, providing our youngsters the opportunity to compete on a larger stage.
