Homicide Investigation in Westfield

July 2, 2013

Westfield, VT –– On July 2 at approximately 12:49 a.m., the Vermont State Police received a call from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department regarding a Vermont resident who was pulled over in Indiana on a traffic violation. The sheriff’s deputy advised that during the course traffic stop the operator, identified as Peter Lavalette, age 49 of Derby, indicated he was involved in a homicide in Vermont.

Persistence Pays Off

The 2013 celebration of graduation for Northeast Kingdom Learning Services students, as well as their friends and family, was held Thursday evening, June 27, 2013 in the newly remodeled Dancing Sail Banquet room at the Eastside Restaurant. Markus Vogt, NEKLS Newport Community Learning Center Manager, opened the ceremony. Mr. Vogt made special mention and a moment of silence was held to honor the passing of a long time NEKLS employee, Jack Stouffer.

Lake Region Wins Three in a Row to Take 12-U Districts

BARTON-This past weekend, North Country and Lake Region completed the 12-U District Championship Tournament.
On Thursday, North Country took it to Lake Region, beating them 10-0 in four innings.
This put the pressure on Lake Region to defeat Northfield Saturday, then win back-to-back games over NC to take the title.
Lake Region cruised on Saturday, despite a change in venue to Barton due to the saturated field at Gardner Park and a one hour rain delay.

North Country 10-U’s Win Tournament in Drummondville

July 2, 2013

Solid pitching and timely hitting were the keys to the North Country 10 & Under All-Star team’s success at the Tournoi National in Drummondville from June 21st -23rd.
NC pitchers Jack Young, Bryce “Gunney” Gunn, David Lessard and Isaac Bliss combined to allow only five runs in four games to take home the championship banner.

NEW ORLEANS - Anyone watching the television program "America's Got Talent" Tuesday, June 11 may have seen a familiar face. Former Newport resident Sam Johnson, who worked with Circus Smirkus as a teenager, did a handstand on an 80-foot pole.

State To Close Route 105 To Replace Bridge

June 30, 2013

BRIGHTON - Motorists who use Route 105 to travel from Derby to Brighton will soon have to take alternate routes while crews replace a temporary bridge with a permanent one. The bridge is just outside of Island Pond.
