Junior High School Bond Vote Defeated

DERBY - In a very light turnout of voters across five towns, the $1.9 million junior high school bond vote for repairs and replacement of the heating and ventilation systems, as well as other ADA mandated upgrades, was defeated by 21 votes.

Supreme Court Orders Lowell To Vote On Anti-Wind Article

At the 2012 Town Meeting in Lowell an article against the Lowell wind project was on the ballot but was passed over by voice without discussion or a vote on it.

“It is apparent from the record that the effect of the motion to pass over Article 8 was to effectively dismiss the article without further debate,” the Supreme Court justices wrote.

Thirty-Two Minute Effort Results in Big Win for North Country

NEWPORT–Looking at the standings before the start of Tuesday's boy's basketball game between North Country and CVU, I figured that this was definitely a game where the Falcons could make a statement.
Both teams had similar records, and had wins and losses against common opponents.
When I got to the gym, I told public address announcer Bob Currier that this was going to be a good game, and that I thought the Falcons could come away with a win.

Senator Rodgers Expresses Concern Over School Budget Increases

DERBY – State Senator John Rodgers of Glover has hit the ground running. A member of the Senate Institutions Committee, which handles education construction funding, Rodgers and his committee colleagues are considering a 6.7 percent increase in the Education Fund proposed by the Governor and financially protecting small schools from bearing the burden of school choice.

Big Second Quarter Play Helps Burlington Past North Country

NEWPORT–While the North Country girls basketball team had a tough time scoring on Monday night, they did show some real progress with their defensive game despite losing to the Burlington Seahorses 46-21.
"We showed some real improvement on defense tonight," said NCU coach Christiane Brown.

In Derby Line: Public Hearing Scheduled On Changing Village Zoning

DERBY – As the Village of Derby Line is dealing with some ongoing issues, the board of trustees is thinking about making some zoning changes.
One main problem is backups at the border from motorists traveling both north and south.

Stanstead College Security Guard Arrested For Cocaine Possession In Illinois

Following the arrest of Stanstead College security guard Sylvain Bergeron for possession of over $1 million worth of cocaine, the college is surprised, and still very much in the dark regarding the details of the arrest.

Bergeron, 42, was driving on interstate 355 in Illinois on Friday, Jan. 10 when he was pulled over by State Troopers for allegedly operating a cell phone while driving and improper lane usage. Troopers then discovered a large amount of cocaine in the vehicle.
