Brighton Town And School Meetings Sparsely Attended

ISLAND POND — The Town of Brighton School District and Town Meeting were sparsely attended, mainly due to the lack of any controversial issues and perhaps the frigid weather. The dual meetings passing the school budget and town budget were held on Monday night, while voting followed on Tuesday.

As a result of the election on Tuesday, retired postmaster James Cross easily won election over William Hawkins with 140 votes to Hawkins’ 67.

Newport Town Passes School Budget Despite Added Teachers

NEWPORT CENTER - Voters on Town Meeting Tuesday night, approved their elementary school budget of $2,766,305.20, even though several parents were upset that the school board hired a mentor Monday for one of the teachers who had been on leave. The school budget vote passed 48 yes votes to 36 no votes.

Wilson, Morrissette Elected To Newport Council

NEWPORT CITY - City voters returned John Wilson to council Tuesday.
Tim de la Bruere did not seek re-election. Neil Morrissette won over Corey Therrien 265-215.

Coventry Contemplates Instituting Municipal Tax

COVENTRY - Thanks to New England Waste Services of Vermont (NEWSVT), property owners in this bedroom community have not paid municipal taxes for years. However, at least one resident who attended Town Meeting Tuesday thinks the town should consider charging a non-resident municipal tax.

Glover Discusses Resolution More Aggressively Than Town Budget

Pass Resolution Against Tar Sands Pipeline

Glover - Town Meeting Day was a cold one this year, and in Glover temperaments stayed fairly cool as well. The town’s budget of $793,061.11 to be raised by taxes was passed with few discussions, and for the first time in at least 40 years, the first time in the memory of anyone present, the meeting concluded before the lunch break.

Jay Peak Applies For Act 250 Permit For Recreation Center

Jay Peak Resort is in the midst of trying to build a recreation center, but is at odds with the town over parking and aesthetics. So far the town has not issued a permit for the plans. Jay Peak applied for an Act 250 permit on January 29 for the center.

Legislators Talk Farming, Gas, Plastic, and Drugged Driving In Irasburg

IRASBURG - The Orleans County Farm Bureau held its annual legislative pancake breakfast held at the town hall Monday morning where farmers had an opportunity to meet their lawmakers face-to-face.
