Elderly Woman Gets Suspended Sentence For Fatal Accident

NEWPORT - A 79-year-old New Hyde Park, N.Y. woman who killed a motorcyclist in an accident in Westmore last August received a six-to-12-month suspended sentence with probation in Orleans County Superior Court Criminal Division Wednesday.

The Stock Market Game: North Country Junior High Students Make A Killing

DERBY CENTER – North Country Union Junior High School social studies teacher Barbara Smith Shafer proudly introduced students Cohen Bryant, Brandon Starr, and Lauryn Goulet to the school board Wednesday evening. The students won a statewide “Stock Market Game.”

Revitalization In Derby Line — ‘Largest Turnout For Regular Meeting In Years’

There seems to be somewhat of a rebirth of energy and enthusiasm in the village of Derby Line. At the village trustees’ regular meeting Monday evening about 20 residents attended. Trustee Chairman Keith Beadle said that it was the largest turnout for a regular village meeting that he has seen in years.

Soccer At Junior High Affected By Summer Construction

DERBY CENTER - With a tight construction schedule at North Country Union Junior High School this summer the school board has concerns over traffic and parking. The school grounds are used to host several soccer leagues and a soccer camp.

Sink Hole Closes Route 242 in Jay

April 16, 2014

JAY - Route 242 between Route 101 and Jay Village remained closed Wednesday due to a large sinkhole. The Agency of Transportation (AOT) closed the road between 7:30 and 8 p.m. Tuesday. The sinkhole happened when a four-foot culvert failed due to high water.

Holland School Budget Passes On Second Try

Holland voters took to the polls again Tuesday for another vote on their school’s budget, an act that seems to becoming a trend. Over the past few years Holland has failed to pass its school budget on the first try. This year’s budget passed the second time around Tuesday without any changes.

NCUHS Resource Officer Connects With Students

NEWPORT CITY – Newport police officer Richard Wells told the North Country Union High School board Tuesday that students respond to him as the school’s resource officer. He also said he would not be returning next year.

Roof Top Gunman Receives Deferred Sentence

NEWPORT CITY - The man who climbed on the roof of his garage with a gun last September received a one-year deferred sentence with probation after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor charge of reckless endangerment in Orleans County Superior Court Criminal Division Tuesday.
