Irasburg: Former Treasurer Settles With Town For $80K

The Town of Irasburg has finally settled with former town treasurer Linda Stone. The town will pay $22,000 and the Vermont League of Cities and Towns/ PACIF will pay $58,000.

The Orleans County Fair

Despite a disappointing first day on a cool, damp Wednesday, the Orleans County Fair Association is optimistic about the rest of the weekend.
Tom Martin, the vice-president of the fair association, said the fair was a couple of thousand people off for opening day, but by mid-day Thursday attendance was ahead of a typical second day.
Franklin County native Keeghan Nolan, a newly signed Nashville recording artist, will be the headliner on the stage Saturday night following opening act Cody Mabe.

Orleans County Sheriff’s Dept. Reinstates K-9 Program

Career Center Penalized By State For Serious Violation

The North Country Career Center (NCCC) was cited and fined $3,500 by the Vermont Department of Labor (DOL) last week for a serious violation.
The DOL investigation at the career center’s Harold J. Haynes Memorial Land Lab on the Quarry Road in Derby took place following a life-threatening accident by former teacher Fern Fontaine.

State’s Attorney Candidates Face Off

The election for Orleans County state’s attorney is typically a lackluster race, but not this year. Four attorneys are vying for the position of top prosecutor. The candidate forum sponsored and organized by local media establishments for those running was held at a Newport restaurant Monday evening.

Brownington Man Shoots State Record Bear

MONTPELIER – Curtis Smiley with the Vermont Big Game Trophy Club says a huge bear taken in the 2013 hunting season is the heaviest bear taken in Vermont by bow and arrow since 1898, and that it is a new record according to skull measurements.
