Jr. High Building Committee Hits The Ground Running

Moving Quickly After Bond Passage To Prepare For Renovation Project

DERBY CENTER - The North Country Union Junior High School’s building committee is moving swiftly to have bids prepared for replacing heating and ventilation systems, removing asbestos tiles, retiling, improve security, add insulation to the 1990 building’s ceiling, and a host of other tasks. A bond for $1.9 million was passed by voters on Town Meeting Day leaving the committee three months before work will begin.

U.S. Supreme Court Upholds Landowner Rights — Rails To Trails Program The Target

DERBY - By an 8-1 vote the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the rights of a Wyoming landowner who had a railroad right-of-way converted to a bike trail. The court ruled government easements used for railroad beds over public and private land expired once the railroad went out of business.

Years ago the State of Vermont claimed the railroad right-of-way that runs from the Newport City boundary with Derby, north along the east side of Lake Memphremagog.

Vermont Electric Co-op Seeking Directors

Vermont Electric Cooperative (VEC) is seeking individuals who want to serve of the board of directors. VEC’s 12-member board is tasked with setting policy for the cooperative. VEC serves about 32,000 members.

Maine Man Pleads Not Guilty To Robbing Circle K At Knifepoint

NEWPORT CITY - The man accused of robbing the Circle K Store in Barton in January pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of assault and robbery with a weapon in the Criminal Division of Superior Court Tuesday.
Daniel Dunn, 23, of Oxford Maine, also pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of grand larceny.

North Country Snowboarders Wrap Up Season at State Meets

North Country had a solid year of riding and competing during the 2014 season, despite the beginning of the season being full of weather-related cancellations.
A team that maintains a strong philosophy developed by their coaches Natalie Guillette and Ryan Anderson, allowed the athletes to focus on being good citizens, while also maintaining their physical and mental health, as all athletes should.

Newport Man Denies Setting Fire To Car On Main Street

NEWPORT CITY - The man who allegedly set a car on fire on Main Street in Newport City late Saturday night pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of third degree arson and a misdemeanor charge of unlawful mischief in the Criminal Division of Orleans Superior Court Monday.
