Seven-year-old Caleb Bickford of Glover collected a trophy at the Orleans Municipal building during the prime rib dinner put on by the Orleans Rod and Gun club for the squirrel he shot while participating in the club’s rabbit hunt Sunday. Firefighters Save Coventry Home

COVENTRY - Firefighters from Newport City and Newport Center saved a home from burning down Sunday morning.
Firefighters responded to the Dale Perron residence on Lawson Ridge around 4 a.m., for a chimney fire with fire on the roof of the home.

Three Men Suspected In O’Hagan Killing Due In Court

ST. JOHNSBURY (AP) — Two of three Vermont men suspected of killing a Sheffield woman during a botched 2010 robbery of her home are due in court Monday to face first-degree murder and other charges.
And an arrest warrant has been issued for a third suspect, state police said.
Richard Fletcher, 27, and Keith Baird, 33, are scheduled to answer murder and other charges during the appearance, according to records at the Caledonia Superior Court in St. Johnsbury.

Movie Shows The Faces Of Those Addicted To Drugs

Long before Gov. Peter Shumlin spoke about the state’s drug problem during his State of the State Address in January, film director Bess O’Brien made the 90-minute film, “The Hungry Heart,” featuring the real life faces of those who use opiates and are in addiction recovery.

Fourth Quarter Scoring Sends Randolph Past Lake Region and into the Finals

BARRE-Lake Region's quest for a spot in the 2014 Division III Finals fell one game short as they lost to the Randolph Galloping Ghosts 70-59.
Clint Provoncha had a great game for the Rangers, scoring 24 points, that included six three pointers.

State, Coventry Landowners Reach Agreement Over Cut Wood

COVENTRY - Following the ice storm in late December, Dale Perron, head of District 9 for the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTRANS), decided a quick cleanup was in order.
...
A controversy arose when a 3.6-mile stretch along Route 5 south of Newport City in the Coventry was cleared of storm damage.
...
Property owners objected to the work because they were not notified previously, and the wood was collected by VTRANS and delivered to state garages in the area to heat the buildings.

Park Restoration Committee Pitches Grant Application To Newport Council

NEWPORT CITY - The Gardner Park Restoration Committee told the city council Monday evening it plans to apply for a Vermont Community Development Program (VCDP) planning grant. The grant is up to $30,000 and the city needs to provide a 25 percent match that can be in-kind services.

Town Meeting Briefs: Morgan Votes To Keep School

ORLEANS COUNTY – Article 14 is the only issue that caused any debate on Town Meeting Day in Morgan, whether the school board should sell the unoccupied school building. Student enrollment declined to the point the town started sending elementary students to Derby Elementary School.
