LOWELL – Residents once again Monday night took on the issue of crime in Lowell.
For the past several months, numerous residents have been victims of burglaries. On Town Meeting Day, residents rejected the appropriation requested for law enforcement coverage by the Orleans County Sheriff Department, which means the department no longer serves the town. Voters will have an opportunity to reconsider their decision May 7. Until then, town officials and residents are looking for answers from the Vermont State Police.

NEWPORT, VT – Well, maybe not seven exactly. More like eleven female artists were on hand at the MAC Center (Memphremagog Arts Collaborative) on Main Street, Newport, on Saturday to demonstrate their craft and honor the only Vermont commemoration of SWAN Day.
This celebration, held in 23 countries, encourages people to “support women artists now.” “The long term goal of SWAN Day,” according to the center, “is to inspire communities to recognize and support women artists as a basic element of civic planning.”

Youngsters Hope to Help Erase 2012 Woes in 2013

ORLEANS–After a year where wins were few and far between, the 2013 Lake Region baseball club is looking to their younger players to turn things around this season.
"We have a great young bunch of guys that want to come out and compete every day, so I am very excited about it." said head coach Eric Degre. "Indoor practices have been incredible. Our pitching is very strong, and it seems to me that we are going to be able to compete in every game this year.

WASHINGTON – Drivers going through any Northeast Kingdom town on any given day could very well see an out-of-town cruiser patrolling the streets and making traffic stops. It's all part of Operation Stone Garden.
The United States Department of Homeland Security started funding Operation Stone Garden in 2008. Initially, the program was restricted to states that border other countries. The federal government later expanded it to states along the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

BURLINGTON - The former office manager of Delabruere’s Auto Sales in Newport denied embezzlement-related charges during her arraignment in U.S. District Court in Burlington yesterday. Manon Cote, 45, of Newport, pleaded not guilty to a three-count indictment charging her with mail and wire fraud and forging checks while employed by Delabruere's Auto Sales in Newport.

ALBANY – Jerry Johnson, a former educator at Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts and former tennis pro, recently released his second book of poems, "Up the Creek Without a Saddle."
Johnson, also known as the Creek Road Poet, writes about what he sees and what is special in his heart. A dream of his was fulfilled when Jon Gailmor and Pete Sutherland, two well-known Vermont musicians, took 16 of his book’s 99 poems and set them to music to produce a CD. When the book is purchased on Johnson’s website, the CD is included for free.
