BIG SNOW, BIG BUCKS

ORLEANS COUNTY - Locally, snow sports enthusiasts are rejoicing with the near perfect conditions of packed powder snow. The cold temperatures and snowfall are a huge welcome for many after last year’s lackluster season of little snow coupled with warmer temperatures.
The unusually warm weather hit the local economy, especially those who depend on outdoor winter activity seekers for their businesses. The slow tourism for snow sports tends to have a ripple effect on other businesses.

ARREST WORRIES HOLLAND PARENTS

HOLLAND – This week, families received a letter from Linda Phelan, Holland Elementary School’s principal, informing them that the husband of a school employee had been arrested on felony charges associated with the sexual assault of a child.
Phelan’s letter identifies the person arrested as Robert Stacey. According to court records, Stacey is charged with inappropriately touching a five year old child in January of 2007 and with having repeated, nonconsensual sexual contact for two years with a girl under 16 years of age from January 1998 to June of 2000.

Boy’s Victorious in OT, Girl’s Go Big as Falcon Hockey Wins Out

BURLINGTON–Two minutes into overtime, Ryan Paul cut through the slot and fired a high back-hander in the glove side of the net to complete the Falcons comeback and give North Country a 5-4 win over Colchester to move their record to 5-0 on the season.
"We are very excited with the win, and to be 5-0 on the season," said head coach Andrew Roy.
The boys had to battle all game long against the Lakers, and were down 2-0 after one period of play.
With 7:59 left in the second, Logan Fortier popped in his first goal of the night to cut the lead to 2-1. Ben Pecue had the assist on the score.

Robitaille–– Oscar, 96, of Derby, VT, passed away peacefully December 28, 2012, in Derby, VT. Funeral services and interment will take place in the spring at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Newport, VT with full military honors. SHOOTING UP

NEWPORT CITY – Alex Tabor, the Newport City man accused of firing a shotgun in city limits Monday, was held at the Northern State Correctional Facility on $10,000 bail after entering not guilty pleas to reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and unlawful mischief in Orleans County Court Wednesday.
The gun was a double barreled, 12 gauge Stevens Model 311.
If Tabor makes bail, he will have to abide by numerous conditions.

Growing Green in the Dead of Winter

COVENTRY – With the price of milk down and plenty of space to work with, the Maxwell Family Farm in Coventry has diversified. They have built a 70-foot by 30-foot greenhouse.
The structure has been up since August and the results have been good.
Stuart Maxwell explains, "We heat the greenhouse with our digester building's heating system. We have radiant heat in the ground and heaters powered by the digester. We had the space and heat so we decided to do something with it. Milk prices are low so we needed to diversify."
This time of year, the Maxwells are growing lettuce and greens.

WESTMORE - It takes courage and perhaps more than a little chutzpah to jump into the icy water of Willoughby Lake on one of the coldest days of of the year, and yet that's what people were doing Tuesday as they donned bathing suits, trudged barefoot across the snow-covered ground, and dove in, all for a good cause.

SHOTS FIRED ON THIRD STREET

NEWPORT CITY – Alex Tabor, 32, of Newport, was arrested by Newport City Police Monday after he allegedly fired off a shotgun within city limits. Tabor is scheduled to be arraigned today.
City police responded to the intersection of Pleasant and Third streets just before 1 AM Monday after receiving a complaint that Tabor had fired a gun over someone's head. Someone driving by at the time reported that their vehicle may have been hit but no injuries were reported.
