ANN JONES: I’M A PEOPLE PERSON

February 7, 2013

DERBY – Ann Jones of Derby is running for the Delinquent Tax Collector job now held by Mary Ann Tetreault. Voters decide every March who will hold the one-year position.
Jones said she just learned about the position last year when Tetreault was elected. Previously she thought it was a job that automatically went to the town clerk. After learning more about it and the process involved, she has decided to go for it in her first time seeking public office.

Falcons Rally Falls Short in 6-4 Loss to South Burlington

February 7, 2013

SO. BURLINGTON– The Falcons rallied to make it 5-4 with three minutes to go in the third period, but the Rebels were able to add an insurance goal with 2:20 left to play sealing the 6-4 win in the highly anticipated rematch between South Burlington and North Country on Wednesday night.
"It was a hard fought come from behind loss," said NCU coach Andrew Roy.
The Falcons were playing without defenseman Logan Fortier, who is on a school trip.
Thankfully Brody Jacobs has returned to the line-up, allowing a three man rotation, something NCU is more than used to.

SUSPICIOUS FIRE

NEWPORT CENTER – An early morning fire destroyed a home on Gibbs Road Wednesday.
Firefighters responded to the structure fire shortly after midnight and found a fully engulfed home.
“It was a very long night,” said fire Chief Kurk Flynn. Road conditions were slippery and icy and firefighters had issues getting sand. They obtained water from a brook near the fire station. “Unfortunately, most of the house was destroyed by the time we got there due to the location and the length of time it had been burning,” Flynn said.
